Pop and pour with no decanting. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with cherries, barnyard, cassis and truffles. Full bodied. Complex and layered with light tannins. This seems to be at peak. On the palate, cherries, dried cherries, and slight tobacco. Clean. Long finish. Contemplative on its own but better with a bit of food. Although it will drink well for another decade, it probably will start a slow slide down soon.

This was a good showing for this wine from what is a very hard and slow to mature vintage. At age 24, however, this one seems to be about at peak. Ruby in color with some browning. The nose is tight but eventually shows cassis, dust and slight soy sauce. On the palate, this again takes some time to open. This was pop and pour, but an hour decant might have been a good idea. Eventually, it shows cassis over a forest floor. It unwinds in the glass showing nice layering. Mild tannins. Medium finish. This should certainly drink well for the next decade. This is drinking great right now. Mature, but absolutely no hurry. Decanted for sediment and served. Purple/ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. No browning. The nose is classic with cherries, cassis, tobacco, leather, slight funk and cigar box. Full bodied. Light but present tannins. On the palate, lots of cherries, black cherries and cassis with earthiness and spice underneath. Layers of complexity. Great balance. Long finish. Contemplative. Great on its own, this would work great with slow braised beef. Based on this bottle, at least a decade left.

Though 1999 is a good if not great vintage, Palmer is certainly one of the top wines of the vintage. This is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It is at peak. This bottle was opened at 2:00 and allowed to breathe until 5:00 when it was double decanted back to its original bottle and sealed before serving at around 8:00. That seemed to be about right. Garnet in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, black cherries, spice, cedar and floral notes. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, this is complex and layered. This is a blend of 70% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Malbec. Pop and pour, this took about an hour and then was drinking quite well. Purple in color, thin ruby rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black cherries, cigar box, slight dark chocolate, a bit of leather. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, cherries, black cherries and coffee with a bit of dried tobacco. Good balance. Seems to be almost or at peak at this point. Great on its own, this will work well with prime rip or other roasted meats. Drink over the next five to ten years.

Decanted for sediment and served. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is earthy with cedar, spice, cassis, and slight celery note. Much more developed and intense on the palate. Cassis and slight tobacco. Good finish. Classic Bordeaux. Served with hearty foods and meats. This producer had some issues in the late 80's but since the mid-90's they have been doing a great job.
