Always a pleasure to try something like this. While 1961 was a top year for reds, less so for whites. This one was past prime. It still had a bit of roasted fruits to offer and not dead, it peaked thirty years ago. Still fun though.
Always a treat to try this wine which is one of the best, if not the best, wines made in Barsac (next to Sauternes). This is young but gorgeous. Light golden in color. The nose is so pretty with cantaloupe and honey and a slight salinity. On the palate, this is sweet, not cloying with an unctuous texture. A nice bit of acidity to keep it lively though not a lot. The melon and honey come thru to the palate along with some apricot. Long finish. This will easily last another 25 years or more if well stored. 2001 was such a great vintage and the wines from Sauternes or Barsac are in a gorgeous place right now. Golden orange in color. The nose is beautiful with honey and apricots. Slightly sweet on the palate. Oranges and apricots with honey. Viscous with a nice backbone of acidity. Long finish. This is complex and layered and demands ones attention. The first sip tastes good, then evolves on the palate and just does not let go. Works great with blue cheese or a savory dessert.
This is a Barsac which is the next commune over from Sauternes in France. Still going along just fine. Made from 100% Semillon grapes.
This is 100% Semillon from Bordeaux. Light, silvery gold in color, clear and bright. Great, powerful nose with papaya, slight tangerine, and chalk notes with nice minerality. Medium to full bodied. Oily texture. Good acidity. On the palate, the tangerine comes thru but also some limes, especially on the long finish. Some depth. This is nice on its own but will work well with foods, too. It will work well with sea food and especially shell fish. Drink over the next eight to ten years.
