2023 Halter Ranch Rosé, USA, California, Paso Robles, Adelaida District, Wine Review

Another very nice wine from Halter Ranch. This rosé is a blend of 93% Grenache, 5% Picpoul Blanc, and 2% Syrah. Salmon pink/orange in color, clear and bright. The nose is "summertime" with strawberries, slight watermelon, slight rhubarb, and a touch of tangerine. Medium bodied. Slightly viscous. On the palate, this drinks easy. flavors of strawberries, watermelons and slight bitter cherry (not in a bad way) notes. Good finish. This is nice on its own, but would work well with lighter dishes such as Tuna or Pasta Salad. Drink now.

America’s Best Rhone Style Red Wines: 11th Annual Rhone Rangers Tasting Reviewed

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we discussed the white Rhone style wines offered at the 2008 Rhone Rangers tasting event at Fort Mason in San Francisco on March 18. This month we turn to the reds, of which we tasted 50. Among those we tasted were some old favorites and some wineries or bottlings with which we were not yet familiar. We don’t pretend that we tasted a representative group of wines, because our sample was skewed to wines we have loved in the past and others about which we have heard positive comments.

This is basically the second wine of Esprit de Tablas from Tablas Creek although they make a lot of different wines, not all available without being in their wine club (highly recommended). This sell for around $30 and can often be found at retail shops. It is young and will likely improve a bit over the next few years. Screw capped! Grenache, Syrah, Counoise and Mourvedre. Whereas the Esprit can be compared to a Chateauneuf du Pape, this is more like a better Cotes du Rhone or even a Gigondas. It has a deep ruby color with some purple swirls. This is blend of 46% Mourvedre, 31% Syrah, 18% Grenache, and 5% Counoise grapes. Tasted from a 375ml bottle. In a full bottle, these will age wonderfully. In this format, they should still age well, but this was a great chance to check in on the wine. Deep ruby in color. The nose has plums, black raspberries, black cherries, spice and char. On the palate, this has a lovely texture. Energetic. Medium tannins. Right now, the black cherries dominate but that will change as it ages. Delicious. Good finish. This is a blend of 60% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 15% Terret Noir grapes. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper and roasted herbs. Full bodied with firm tannins. On the palate, black raspberries with some char underneath. Delicious. Nice acidity. Long finish. They Syrah is dominating now but this should gain some complexity with a few more years in bottle. Drink over the next twelve to fifteen years. This would work great with Indian or Thai food with a bit of spice.

Torrin makes some of the best Rhone styled wines anywhere. This is 30% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Tannat, so not completely a Rhone styled wine. Close enough. There wines are big and generally need at least five years to start to be approachable for my tastes. This one is just getting there. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, plums, slight black cherries, blueberries, slight dust and spice. It's great. On the palate, this is big and wide. Great texture.
