This is a blend of Merlot 40%, Corvina 30%. and Croatina 30% from northeast Italy. The grapes are harvested and then allowed to dry so that 30% of their volume is reduced and the remaining juice (Must) is very high in sugar. The wine is then fermented dry (or close to it) which leaves a complex wine that has a bit more alcohol. In this case, the wine lists 14% abv. This is the Passimento method which is the process used for making Amarone. Garnet in color, partly opaque and bright. The nose is tight upon opening but opens quickly to show Black Cherries, dried leather, wild thyme and slight cherries. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. A strong backbone of acidity. On the palate, flavors of red and black cherries with an anise note that grows on the long finish. This is nice on its own but really needs a bit of food to show its best. This would go well with a steak but also a Risotto would be nice. Drink over the next seven to ten years.
