2021 Michael Angelo's Cabernet Sauvignon Wildflour, American, Wine Review

This is made with grapes grown on the West Coast and shipped to Ohio. Purple in color with garnet hues, opaque and bright. The nose is great with cassis, black cherries, and a slight herbal (chervil?) note. Full bodied. Gripping tannins. On the palate, black cherries and cassis with some char and slight reductive (burnt rubber) notes. Good acidity. Long finish. This needs a few years of cellaring to integrate and then should drink well for another eight to twelve years. It would work well with Lamb Stew or a Cassoulet.

This was my second time trying this and confirmed that this is a very nice Cabernet and had improved a bit with further cellaring. It may yet have even more upside. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cassis, and black cherries but also a bit of coffee beans and char. No noticeable green notes this time. Full bodied. Medium to full tannins. On the palate, still of course primary, but there is plenty of depth there. Also, plenty of fruit. Any reductiveness seems to have blown off. Nice finish. Apparently made from Washington state (Red Mountain) fruit that is then shipped to Ohio. Packaged in a Burgundy shaped bottle. This was very good and really made me take notice upon trying. Garnet in color with purple hues, mostly opaque and bright. The nose needs some air to get going, but then shows nice black cherries, figs, roasted vegetables, and slight coffee grounds. Full bodied. Urban Vintner is an Ohio winery making wine from purchased grapes. This particular wine uses grapes from the Red Mountain AVA in Washington State. This was the best of their wines and is not only respectable but quite good. Garnet in color. The nose has black cherries with a slight herbal (chervil?) note. The tannins come on strong at first but mellow out on the midpalate and finish. There is some depth and complexity but this is young and could use a few years in the cellar. This is from fruit from the Champoux Vineyard. Ruby/purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. Cassis, graphite, slight burnt rubber and a hint of volatile acidity on the nose. Full bodied. Nice texture. On the palate, cassis with some cedar. Deep and complex. Medium tannins. Long finish. This is showing well and pretty close to peak. No hurry though. Drink over the next ten to twelve years. Better with food. This would work well with Beef Wellington.

This winery still exists but they were sold and utilize a completely different model for grapes these days. But, back in the day, this was the best winery in Ohio. It is located in the southern part of the state along the Ohio River. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, slight herbal notes and a bit of spice. Medium to firm tannins. On the palate, black cherries, green bell pepper, and some spice. Good finish.
