2005 Kinkead Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, USA, Ohio River Valley, Wine Review

This winery still exists but they were sold and utilize a completely different model for grapes these days. But, back in the day, this was the best winery in Ohio. It is located in the southern part of the state along the Ohio River. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, slight herbal notes and a bit of spice. Medium to firm tannins. On the palate, black cherries, green bell pepper, and some spice. Good finish. Overall, a pleasant, quality Cabernet that at age 19 is drinking just fine. still, I would drink these sooner than later. Probably better with some food. A nice choice with grilled meats.

About 150 years ago, the Ohio River Valley was one of the top wine producing spots in the United States. These days, the wine industry is more tourist based, but a decade ago, Kinkead Ridge was producing some excellent reds and 2007 was a great vintage (something that only happens maybe once a decade). This one is drinking just fine right now at age 11. Purple in color, slight ruby at the rim. The nose shows some tobacco, cherries, and slight spice. Slight tannins on the palate. Urban Vintner is an Ohio winery making wine from purchased grapes. This particular wine uses grapes from the Red Mountain AVA in Washington State. This was the best of their wines and is not only respectable but quite good. Garnet in color. The nose has black cherries with a slight herbal (chervil?) note. The tannins come on strong at first but mellow out on the midpalate and finish. There is some depth and complexity but this is young and could use a few years in the cellar. Purple in color, ruby t the rim. The nose has cassis and bell pepper. Also some baking spice. The bell pepper is distracting but eventually mostly blows off which is fine. On the palate, this is better. Cassis with some underlying oak/spice. Some depth and complexity. Seems tight and a bit shut down at this point, so give it plenty of air if opening. This will work with medium and heavier foods nicely. Certainly has potential for improvement.

Wow. What a showing. The grapes for this come from a "young" block in the Champoux vineyard. Of course, they were not really that young in 2008. And the best few barrels of this were bottles separately as a "Reserve". This may be the best Washington Cabernet I have had. Period. OK, let's get this part out of the way. This is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 2% Petite Verdot from Washington state. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, char and slight dark chocolate. Full bodied. Silky tannins. On the palate, black cherries, cassis, slight chocolate and a bit of spice. Some minty and bitter cherry notes on the finish. There is some depth here and it may improve a bit with short term cellaring. It is nice on its own, but seemed better with food. Of course, a burger would do, but it worked great with Felafel. Drink over the next five to eight years.
