Pinot Noir is a difficult grape to grow anywhere and Northeast Ohio doesn't often have great summers to grow it, but this did get a Silver Medal in the Ohio Wines Competition. Pale ruby/purple in color, clear and bright. The nose has cranberries and rhubarb. Light to medium bodied. On the palate, flavors of rhubarb, some cranberry and some herbal notes. This will go better with food. Grilled Salmon would work well.
This is made from grapes grown near the Lake Erie shore in northeastern Ohio. It is cooler climate in style. Of course, Pinot Noir is difficult to make anywhere, and this one is not only varietally correct, it is good. Ruby in color with a few daker swirls, clear and bright. The nose has cherries, rhubarb, slight herbal note, and a bit of spice. Medium bodied.
This is their base Pinot Noir which is a combination of what was not bottled as a single vineyard. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, cranberries and some rhubarb along with a touch of spice. Medium bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, this is deep and tasty. Flavors of cherries, sour cherries and cranberries. Good finish. Nice on its own, this is better with food. It would be great with stuffed Portobellos. This is a great value in Pinot Noir. Drink over the then next eight to twelve years.
Drouhin has been making wines in Oregon for a long time now and they really make some excellent wines. This is their basic version. Medium ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is great with sour cherries, cherries, slight sandalwood, slight cranberries and slight coffee. Medium bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. It's classic Oregon in style. Flavors of cherries, sour cherries, cranberries, spice and slight char. Great balance. Long finish. Still on the young side, this should add complexity with age. Another wine from Food and Gift purveyors Harry & David. These are available from their web site and stores and sold as packages and gift sets along with their other products. The label touts that the grapes were picked early in the season which seemed a bit counter intuitive although they likely are trying to achieve a crispness. Given Oregon's climate, that was a bit puzzling. In any event, not the first wine label I didn't understand. The wine itself is very nice.
