2019 North Coast Wine Club Riesling, Washington, Yakima Valley, Wine Review

The grapes are grown in Washington and shipped (34F) to northeast Ohio where the wines are made. 12% abv. Light golden in color. The nose is interesting with nice minerality along with a slight chamomile note and peaches. Medium bodied. Dry. On the palate, the minerality comes thru along with a bit of lemon peel. Nice finish. This is drinking well now on its own and should be quite food friendly. A nice match would be Thai food. Drink over the next five to eight years.

Riesling: Washington’s Great White Wine

I’ve always loved Riesling in its myriad forms. Ranging from dry to very sweet, this most versatile grape is a classic. Usually low in alcohol, with moderate to high acid, and tones of green apple, citrus, apricot, white flowers and minerals, this wine goes with just about anything but red meat. These days, I think that M Cellars is making some of the best wines in Ohio. They are nestled in the northeast corner of Ohio not too far from the Lake Erie shore. There are actually quite a few wineries in that part of the state. Most utilize a "tourist" model for selling their wine. M Cellars is one of the few attempting to make world class wines and more often than not, they achieve that goal. This bottle was recently purchased at their tasting room. This is join venture made in Washington state. Back in the day, this was a bit pricey vis a vis the other options but the price has remained stable and now full retail is about $25. A nice wine for that price. Light golden in color. The nose has peaches, minerals and slight char. With air a slight lychee note emerges. On the palate, this is just slightly sweet. Peaches with nice minerality. A softer texture. Nice finish. This is drinking well now and should for the next five to ten at least. It will work with almost any food. Spicy foods would be great!

Served blind. Always a favorite, it seems this has come down in price over the years and is now an excellent value. Light golden in color with some slight silvery hues, clear and bright. The nose is nice with an outdoorsy/hay quality. Also minerality and slight lemon/citrus notes. Medium bodied. Good acidity. Nice texture. On the palate, lemons with slight grapefruits. Slightly clipped finish. This drinks great on its own and is very food friendly. It will go well with Thai food. Drink over the next ten years.
