2020 Chateau Ste. Michelle & Dr. Loosen Riesling Eroica, USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Wine Review

Served blind. Always a favorite, it seems this has come down in price over the years and is now an excellent value. Light golden in color with some slight silvery hues, clear and bright. The nose is nice with an outdoorsy/hay quality. Also minerality and slight lemon/citrus notes. Medium bodied. Good acidity. Nice texture. On the palate, lemons with slight grapefruits. Slightly clipped finish. This drinks great on its own and is very food friendly. It will go well with Thai food. Drink over the next ten years.

This is join venture made in Washington state. Back in the day, this was a bit pricey vis a vis the other options but the price has remained stable and now full retail is about $25. A nice wine for that price. Light golden in color. The nose has peaches, minerals and slight char. With air a slight lychee note emerges. On the palate, this is just slightly sweet. Peaches with nice minerality. A softer texture. Nice finish. This is drinking well now and should for the next five to ten at least. It will work with almost any food. Spicy foods would be great!

Riesling: Washington’s Great White Wine

I’ve always loved Riesling in its myriad forms. Ranging from dry to very sweet, this most versatile grape is a classic. Usually low in alcohol, with moderate to high acid, and tones of green apple, citrus, apricot, white flowers and minerals, this wine goes with just about anything but red meat. This was a very enjoyable Riesling from Washington state. The back label talked about dry wine, but this is semi-dry. Screw capped. Silvery/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is more about minerality than fruit. Tight but opens with some air to show some tropical fruits. On the palate, there is a nice pineapple streak with minerality and yes a bit of sweetness. Enough acidity to balance this nicely.

Sineann makes some great whites in addition to their more well known Reds. This is a dynamite Riesling from the Columbia Gorge, one of the few AVA's that cross state lines. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with pineapples, slight honey and minerals. Medium bodied. On the palate, just the slightest perception of sweetness. Minerals, peaches with slight tropical fruit notes. Good finish. A different drink than a European Riesling, but this hits the spot on a warm summer evening. Drink over the next ten years. It drinks very well on its own but will work with
