2019 Grosgrain Syrah Seven Hills Vineyard, USA, Washington, Walla Walla, Wine Review

Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is tight but opens to show black cherries, slight black raspberries, white pepper, slight roasted meats, and spice. Medium bodied. Nice texture. Good acidity. On the palate, flavors of black cherries, black raspberries, with some char. Good finish. This needs air or cellar time still and may improve. Nice on its own, this will be a bit better with food to open it up. A nice match would be Osso Bucco. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

One of my favorite Washington Syrahs, the 2016 is right up there. These are big Syrahs, especially for Washington, but they will come down with age. inky purple in color, ruby at the rim. Opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, black pepper and a slight floral (violets?) note. Full bodied. Wonderful, juicy texture. Tons of black raspberry fruit on the palate with an underlying roasted herb note.

Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper, roasted herbs, slight burnt rubber, and a bit of cherries. Full bodied. Rich texture. Lots of vibrancy. On the palate, good fruit but not as boisterous as some vintages. Black raspberries, black cherries, with underlying char and roasted meats. Nice finish. This is obviously young but drinking well. It should mature for another five to ten years and drink well for eight to twelve after that. It drinks great on its own and will work for big flavored foods. Roasted chicken would work well.

Wow. My first time trying this wine and it is spectacular. Purple in color with a slight ruby rim. The nose has toast, black raspberries and black pepper. With air notes of soy sauce and black olives emerge. Full bodied but this lovely silky but powerful texture. On the palate, this has great boysenberry fruit with an underlying minerality. It is deep and complex and persistent on the palate. It is also delicious. Long finish. This will easily continue to improve for a decade and be good for another decade or two after that. It worked great with a spicy pasta dish but would work

Another stunning Syrah from this winery! Syrahs from Washington are unique. They really show the terroir. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, burnt rubber, black olives, smoked meats and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great balance. On the palate, black raspberries, crushed rocks, and black pepper. Long finish. Delicious. This has a certain elegance in it not often found in new world Syrah. No harm opening now, but it should continue to mature and maybe even get better. This is 100% Syrah from Washington state. Inky purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is boysenberry, black pepper, slight roasted meats and a hint of burnt rubber. Medium to full bodied. Delicious. On the palate, lush black raspberry fruit with underlying char. Also some black pepper. Very smooth. Long finish. This is still young and will no doubt continue to improve for another five to seven years. It should drink well for ten to fifteen more after that. Drinks well on its own and will work with bigger foods especially roasts or off the grill.
