2019 G d'Estournel, France, Bordeaux, Medoc, Wine Review

This is a blend of 86% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc grown in the northern Medoc appellation of Bordeaux. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, leather, clay and spice. Medium bodied. Firm tannins. Nicely balanced. On the palate, this is open and drinking well. Flavors of black cherries and cherries with some forest floor and char. Good finish. This is ready to go and drinking well and should continue for the next five to eight years. It is nice on its own but better with food. Lamb Stew would work nicely.

Another wine to turn to when looking for value in top vintages of Bordeaux. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cassis and plums and slight leather and char. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, this is firm tannins. A velvety texture. Lots of cassis fruit with underlying leather and slight char. Good acidity. Nice finish. This needs another five to eight years to approach maturity and should drink well for ten to fifteen after that. This will work well with grilled or roasted meats (or vegetables).

Always a great value in Bordeaux and especially a nice option in the best years as this is ready to drink sooner than the "big boys". A blend of 45% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black cherries, cassis, tobacco and black pepper. Medium bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, cassis and cherry fruit with slight chocolate and a bit of char. Good acidity. Garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, slight black raspberries, and spice. It is tight and took some time to open. On the palate, the attack is slightly sweet but that calms down and midpalate has nice cassis and cherry fruit. Firm tannins. Soft texture. Solid finish. This needs a bit of time to come together. I enjoyed it more than those I tasted it with. Hold for a few more years and drink for seven to ten after that. It might be interesting to try with a Potato Kugel.

For those who say that Bordeaux has gotten crazy over priced, look no further than this wine which is a great value. It is a blend of 49% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc. Purple in color, mostly opaque and shimmering bright in the glass. The nose has black cherries, some chocolate and slight cigar box. Medium bodied. Wispy tannins. On the palate, this is tasty. Black cherries, some black raspberries with some underlying char and a bit of chocolate. Good finish but there is some heat. This is drinking well but still could use a bit of air. This has always been one of my favorite value Bordeaux wines almost always hitting above its weight class. This is no exception. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has some nice funk with black cherries, and slight green bell pepper. Medium bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, black cherries, some cherries with just a hint of bell pepper and black pepper. Nice balance. Nice finish. This needs some time and food to shine. Give it a nice decant or a few years in the cellar. Drink over the next ten. It will work well with a beef stew or cassoulet.
