2017 Costaripa Valtènesi Rosamara, Italy, Lombardia, Riviera del Garda Classico DOC, Wine Review

This Rose is made in the Lake Garda area of northern Italy. It is a blend of Uve Grapello, Marzemino, Sangiovese and Barbera. Salmon pink/orange in color, clear and bright. Very different nose with cherries, green tea and an herbal note. Medium bodied. On the palate, the cherries and the herbs come thru. Dry. These should be consumed sooner than later. It went nicely with Fricos with artichoke dip - not an easy match.

Lagrein: Red Wine from Italy's Alto Adige Region is Great for Winter Recipes

Near the Austrian border in northern Italy, from the region of Alto Adige comes an excellent red wine called Lagrein (pronounced la-GRINE) that really hits the spot on a winters night dinner table. Lagrein is also the name of the grape from which it is made. As was discussed here , the area of Alto Adige is very close to the Austrian border and has a shared history with both Italy and Austria. Hence, the German language is spoken frequently and either or both languages may appear on a wine label. You can find it made as both a red wine, often called Dunkel in German and Scuro in Italian, or a Rosè, called Kretzer in German or Rosato in Italian.

Italy makes a wide variety of sparkling wines that are wonderful values and great tasting wines suitable for the holidays. This may be a good time to take a step back from discussing the specific wines of Italy and discuss some of the terms that others and I have been bandying about in these articles. More importantly, this discussion will be useful when trying to read the label on a bottle of Italian wine that you may be contemplating either buying or drinking. Specifically, I would like to address the Italian wine laws that create classifications for wines based upon geographical location.
