emBrazen is a new line of wines honoring bold women who were trailblazers in their fields. This one honors Celia Crus, salsa singer originally from Cuba. Look her up. Yellow gold in color. The nose has slight grapefruit. On the palate, this is easy. Not a lot of acidity here. Slight grapefruit. This retails for $16 which is a fair price. The label is sure to start a few discussion.
I have had a fair amount of wine from this producer over the years with various results for my tastes. Sometimes, the wines carry too much oak and others they are amazing. No doubt, some of the difference is due to the fruit and some the vintage. And tastes vary. This one straddles the line for me and goes right up to the edge but doesn't cross that line. At a recent blind tasting of Napa Chardonnay's, it turned out that there were two identical bottles submitted and served blind. Always an interesting experiment as such factors as storage and even the tasting order can affect the results. As it turned out, bottle #1 was the first served while bottle #2 was the last one served.
This is a project from former baseball manager Tommy Lasorda. I was a bit skeptical about it but this is good. It retails for around $20 which makes this a great bargain in the world of California Chardonnay as well. Pop and pour, it drank well although did improve for the first 30 minutes or so before plateauing until the bottle was emptied. Light gold/green in color. The nose is nice with grapefruit and slight vanilla. Neutral oak barrels were used but there are some very pleasant oak remnants if light. With air some green apples pop out as well. This winery is fast becoming one of my favorites for Chardonnay and Santa Crus is definitely my favorite region in the world for Chardonnay. That is a pretty bold statement but there it is. Light golden in color. The nose has lemons, lemon candy, minerals and slight vanilla. On the palate, this is ever so slightly sweet/ripe with lemons and great minerality.
