2016 Domaine du Grand Montmirail Gigondas Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, France, Rhone, Wine Review

This was from Magnum. Deep purple in color. The nose is great with black raspberries, black cherries, garrique and char. On the palate, this is as good as many Chateauneuf du Papes. Deep black raspberry notes with underlying charred wood. Medium tannins. Good acidity. Nice finish. This is young and has at least a decade left and probably more. The juiciness and char would make it great with burgers or steaks on the grill. At $43 for a Magnum, this is a great value.

Gigondas is a great place to find nice value in Rhone wines. Montmirail is a good choice for producers in Gigondas. This is a blend of 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, black raspberries, black pepper, and some earthiness. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, the black cherry fruit dominates over an earthy/forest floor base. Nice balance. Mild tannins. Good finish. This is drinking well but may still get a bit better over the next five to seven years. It will drink well for ten to twelve more years

This is very good and for $30 a nice value. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, slight mocha, spice and plums. On the palate, this has a wonderful texture. Juicy and plush. Lots of black cherry fruit. The mocha note carries thru. Medium to full bodied. Good acidity. Delicious. Will work with heavier foods (think cassoulet). This has some upscale with future development and should be good for another decade, maybe more.

This house and this wine don't seem to get the attention that they deserve despite the critics loving them. It is a blend of 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is big with black raspberries, black cherries, slight plums, spices, floral notes and roasted meats. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great energy. On the palate, this is delicious. Complex. Layers of black raspberries, plums and black cherries with some char and spice. Long finish. This is getting close to peak and should drink well for another eight to twelve years. Great

This was a pleasant surprise. Served from Magnum and along side some bigger California wines, this provided a nice contrast and was quite tasty. 2014 was not a particularly good vintage in the southern Rhone, but of course, good producers usually find a way to make good wines. Ruby in color. The nose is nice with cherries, garrique/spice, and slight floral notes. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Nice cherry fruit with some dark cherry and a bit of earthiness. This is still quite young and patience will be rewarded. That said, if you have a few or like them young, then this is great now too. This bottle was decanted for four hours prior to drinking. Inky purple in color. The nose is black raspberries, charred wood, pepper, spice but also a lovely little lavender. On the palate, this is big. Brooding but still shows black raspberries, blueberries, black pepper and slight charred earth. Medium tannins. A nice streak of acidity. Long finish. This wine begs for food. Cassoulet, steak or roasted vegetables would be great. Probably another
