2014 Domaine La Millière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, France, Rhone, Wine Review

This was a pleasant surprise. Served from Magnum and along side some bigger California wines, this provided a nice contrast and was quite tasty. 2014 was not a particularly good vintage in the southern Rhone, but of course, good producers usually find a way to make good wines. Ruby in color. The nose is nice with cherries, garrique/spice, and slight floral notes. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Nice cherry fruit with some dark cherry and a bit of earthiness. Good acidity. Nice finish. This worked quite well with some home made pizzas and in general is food friendly. It is drinking well now and probably should be consumed in the next five years.

This was from Magnum. Deep purple in color. The nose is great with black raspberries, black cherries, garrique and char. On the palate, this is as good as many Chateauneuf du Papes. Deep black raspberry notes with underlying charred wood. Medium tannins. Good acidity. Nice finish. This is young and has at least a decade left and probably more. The juiciness and char would make it great with burgers or steaks on the grill. At $43 for a Magnum, this is a great value.

Another great vintage in the southern Rhone valley in France. Deep garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, slight anise and floral notes (Violets?). Medium bodied. On the palate, the cherries and dark cherries come thru with underlying spices and roasted herbs. Nice texture. Good balance. Nice finish. This is drinking well now and should continue to do so for the next seven to ten years. It drinks well on its own but will work better with foods. Ribs off the grill would be a nice choice.

This house and this wine don't seem to get the attention that they deserve despite the critics loving them. It is a blend of 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is big with black raspberries, black cherries, slight plums, spices, floral notes and roasted meats. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great energy. On the palate, this is delicious. Complex. Layers of black raspberries, plums and black cherries with some char and spice. Long finish. This is getting close to peak and should drink well for another eight to twelve years. Great

Upon first tasting, this wine wasn't giving up a thing. Really tight. But after an hour or two of air and multiple other pours being taken, this finally started to open up and show something. That said, drink this quick or be prepared to wait a while before revisiting as if not shut down, it is getting there quickly. Deep ruby in color. The nose has black cherries with rocks and dust. This is still quite young and patience will be rewarded. That said, if you have a few or like them young, then this is great now too. This bottle was decanted for four hours prior to drinking. Inky purple in color. The nose is black raspberries, charred wood, pepper, spice but also a lovely little lavender. On the palate, this is big. Brooding but still shows black raspberries, blueberries, black pepper and slight charred earth. Medium tannins. A nice streak of acidity. Long finish. This wine begs for food. Cassoulet, steak or roasted vegetables would be great. Probably another
