2015 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

Amazing wine. Maybach is right up there with any winery in California, or the world for that matter. Just spectacular. Purple to the rim. The nose has graphite, cassis powdered sugar (thanks George), blueberries and warm earth. On the palate, this is ripe without being sweet. Cassis. Deep. Tightly layered, it explodes in the glass. Seamless. Long finish. It will change and morph but can it get better? I suppose so, but it is 100 points right now. On a night with a lot of Napa stars, this was the groups WOTN. Wow.

Had this again in July, 2018. Consistent notes with the first time. 100 Points and fantastic.

Top 50 California Cabernet Sauvignons to Try Before You Quit Drinking (a non-dump bucket list if you will!)

In putting together a list of the top California Cabernets, there is sure to be some disagreement. I tried to include those wines that have a track record, the wineries still making great wines, those that seemed to have the commitment for the future and some personal favorites. I am sure I left some out. 1. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select – It’s always hard to name the number one wine. But this has a track record that’s very long. Even in less than stellar vintages, it is an outstanding wine. They just don’t seem to make a dud. My only complaint is the price at over $200 a bottle. But, in comparison to other Napa Cabs or elsewhere in the world, this is a fair price.

Wow. This wine should make old bones, but it is so good now, it is not likely to. Stunning wine that seemingly gets better and better. This bottle was consumed over 4 hours and the last glass was the best. Inky purple in color. The nose has cassis, graphite, cedar, blueberries and spice. On the palate, this has a seamless texture. Delicious. Deep and tightly layered; it explodes in the glass. Tons of cassis and blue berries layered with minerality and spice. Medium tannins. Long finish. It does need bigger or spicier food, but it is oh so good.

This is showing to be the equal of the 2007 and the best wine ever made by Thomas Rivers Brown which is no faint praise. An exceptional bottle of wine that while young now is incredible and may still improve. It will certainly evolve. One can debate if a 100 point wine can get better on a philosophical basis. There is no question that this is a 100 point wine now, so what happens if it does improve? In any event, this is a shimmering, bright, opaque purple in color. One of my favorite wines anywhere. I suppose at some time, this will be out of my price range, but for now, I always buy. This seems to be a bit tighter than the 2015 at a similar stage but will no doubt someday flirt with a 100 point score. Purple in color, opaque and shimmering bright. The nose, after an hour or so of air, show cassis, coffee grounds, slight chocolate and spice. Full bodied. What a wonderful, almost seamless texture.
