2015 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Le Mont, France, Loire Valley, Wine Review

This is delicious if young today. Just a wonderful dessert wine. And a wine that will out live all of us. This is Chenin Blanc at its best. Light golden in color. The nose has ocean air, some crushed shells, orange peel and honey. With air some poached pear notes emerge. On the palate, this is slightly viscous. It is sweet but short of cloying. Enough acidity to balance. Flavors of honey and baked apples. Long finish. Delicious in small amounts. This goes well with ripe cheese or a savory cake.

Vouvray: A Chenin Blanc for the Ages

Among Americans, the Loire Valley is most often associated with gardens and castles and not much else. We journey the 150 kilometers southwest from Paris and take a day or two visiting Chateau de Chambord and Chenonceau, all the while enjoying the delightful flora and thinking of bygone days when princes and noblemen still roamed the cavernous halls in this ancient land. But the French know better. They know what we foreigners are just beginning to discover—that some of the most interesting, delicious, and affordable wines in the world hail from the chalky soil on which those famous castles stand.

This is a late harvest wines made from Chenin Blanc grapes in the Loire Valley, France. 12% abv. Very pretty in the glass with a deep golden color, clear and bright. The nose has orange zest, honey apricots and sea air. Full bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, this is sweet and is probably best served as a dessert wine. Not cloying. Another great bottle from this, arguably the best, producer of Vouvray. This is Chenin Blanc at its best. Light golden/silver in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with quince, slight peach, saline, and lots of crushed shells and minerals. Medium bodied and slightly viscous texture. On the palate, this is dry. Just an outstanding bottle of wine from a wine that is just about always great! Light golden in color with slight green swirls. A gorgeous nose with honey, pineapple, great minerality, salinity and crushed shells. On the palate, this is slightly viscous. Slightly sweet. Wonderfully balanced. Another gorgeous bottle from one of the top producers of Vouvray. Light golden in color. The nose is great. Lots of minerality with pears, quince and saline. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Ripe quince and orange peel with underlying minerality. Great smooth texture. Nice balance. Long finish. This is slightly sweet but certainly not overt. This should last for a couple of decades although Huet has had some issues with random bottles prematurely oxidizing. Still, laying a few down and drinking some young is a nice strategy.
