2019 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Mont, France, Loire, Wine Review

Another great bottle from this, arguably the best, producer of Vouvray. This is Chenin Blanc at its best. Light golden/silver in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with quince, slight peach, saline, and lots of crushed shells and minerals. Medium bodied and slightly viscous texture. On the palate, this is dry. Peach, quince with minerals underneath. well balanced acidity. Very smooth. Long finish. This is delicious. Of course, this is quite young but it comes out firing on all cylinders. It should drink well for the net twenty years. This drinks great on its own (it took little time to drain the bottle) and will work well with sea food. A great choice with lobster.

Vouvray: A Chenin Blanc for the Ages

Among Americans, the Loire Valley is most often associated with gardens and castles and not much else. We journey the 150 kilometers southwest from Paris and take a day or two visiting Chateau de Chambord and Chenonceau, all the while enjoying the delightful flora and thinking of bygone days when princes and noblemen still roamed the cavernous halls in this ancient land. But the French know better. They know what we foreigners are just beginning to discover—that some of the most interesting, delicious, and affordable wines in the world hail from the chalky soil on which those famous castles stand.

Another gorgeous bottle from one of the top producers of Vouvray. Light golden in color. The nose is great. Lots of minerality with pears, quince and saline. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Ripe quince and orange peel with underlying minerality. Great smooth texture. Nice balance. Long finish. This is slightly sweet but certainly not overt. This should last for a couple of decades although Huet has had some issues with random bottles prematurely oxidizing. Still, laying a few down and drinking some young is a nice strategy. Just an outstanding bottle of wine from a wine that is just about always great! Light golden in color with slight green swirls. A gorgeous nose with honey, pineapple, great minerality, salinity and crushed shells. On the palate, this is slightly viscous. Slightly sweet. Wonderfully balanced. The Vouvray's of Huet are my most often opened white wine. 100% Chenin Blanc. This vintage seems to be not a top vintage but the wine is still excellent and a nice value. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with pears, sea air, some orange peel and slight herbal note. Medium bodied. Slightly oily texture. Crisp acidity. On the palate, this is dry (Sec) with pears and slight citrus. Moderate finish. This improved over the three hours it took to drain the bottle (two people). Deep golden in color. The nose shows some slight oxidation but not a lot. Some apple cider notes but also fresh pears. On the palate, this is just barely sweet. The apple cider carries thru as does the pears. Good finish. So the big question is whether this was a pristine bottle. At age 13, it probably should have been a bit fresher. On the other hand, it was varietally correct. It seems this was close enough that it is within the variance of a 13 years old top Vouvray. All in all, this should have been better but it was still very good.
