2015 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese, Germany, Nahe, Wine Review

If you like sweet Rieslings, this is a fantastic wine. At age 11, it is in a great space with years left. Medium golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has peaches, flint, pineapple, and lime. Medium bodied. Slightly viscous. Great acidity. On the palate, this is delicious. Slightly sweet. Flavors of lime/citrus, minerality, peach and slight pineapple. Long finish. This is very food friendly and will work with most foods. Thai food would be a perfect match. drink over the next twenty years.

Best German Rieslings (For the Money)

German Rieslings are, to put it bluntly, misunderstood wines. German winemakers will tell you that Riesling is their country's flagship wine and that the Riesling grape works perfectly with the cooler climates and slaty soils of German river valleys. If, however, you ask a group of non-German wine drinkers to tell you about Riesling, several of them will probably use phrases like "too sweet" and "doesn't pair well" in their descriptions. In my opinion, they are missing out on one of the world's great wines.

Wonderful, if still very young, showing for this wine. Golden in color with just a hint of green hues. The nose has peaches with smoke and wet rocks. Boisterous acidity. Great texture. On the palate, this is delicious. Peaches and baked peaches oppose crisp minerality and wet rocks. Plenty of depth if still tight. It unwinds in the glass. Long finish. This is very young and just starting to get expressive. It should improve over the next twenty years or so and then drink well for twenty more after that. Another of my favorite German producers and this is possibly my favorite of all of his wines. This was better than a bottle I had a couple of years ago. Light golden in color, with slight silvery hues, clear and bright. The nose is great with lots of minerality/"wet rocks" along with a touch of pineapple and some salinity. Medium bodied. Slightly viscous. On the palate, this is sweet. It is also deep and delicious. As it ages it will develop a complexity but lost some of the vibrancy.
