2015 Château Fonbadet, France, Bordeaux, Pauillac, Wine Review

This estate provides some real value in Bordeaux especially in the good (expensive) vintages. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, cassis, cigar box and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is showing a nice complexity. It should still develop more but is getting closer to peak. Cassis with spice and char. Long finish. This is nice on its own but better with food. It would work well with Lamb Stew. Drink over the next eight to ten years.

Pop and pour. This is very solid but given the release price ($50) and ten years from a great vintage, it seemed to under perform a bit. Purple in color. The nose is tight at first but eventually opens up to cassis and spice. On the palate, this has a nice enough texture. Nice cassis fruit but a bit one dimensional. Perhaps there is still time to develop but it seems that if that was the case, there would be glimpses. Still, it is enjoyable and if straightforward, at least that is a good direction.

Popped the cork, allowed to breathe for an hour or so. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, slightly flat and opaque. The nose is classic Bordeaux. Some Bordeaux earthy funk along with cassis, cigar box and cedar. Firm tannins. Nicely balance. Great texture. On the palate, this is just about at peak but maybe not quite. Layered complexity. Cassis, earthiness, tobacco and slight char. Long finish with some dark chocolate on it. Delicious. Everything one could have hoped for on purchase. This was served for a friends 60th birthday. It was decanted for sediment and allowed to breathe for 20 minutes before being poured into glasses and given another ten minutes. I ended up letting the wine go another 45 minutes (checking in on it during that time) before consuming which seemed to me optimum. The bottle was bought a few years ago at auction and seemed sound and looked legit. Purple in color, a bit lighter at the core with some browning especially at the edges. Lots to say about this wine, but first, why it was opened. My friend Chris is about to retire. Way back in 1986 or so, Chris was convinced to spend $30 for a 375ml bottle of this wine. Since that time, he has waited for the right special occasion to open the bottle. Luckily for me (since I din't meet Chris until around 2010), this bottle is known to maturing at a glacial pace.
