2013 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

Wow. One of the great wines in the world. This was a 100 point wine. And it's still young! Purple in color. The nose has cassis, blueberries, cedar, floral notes, spice and licorice. Intoxicating. On the palate, it is deep and complex. Seamless. Silky tannins. Juicy acidity. Cassis, blueberries, slight leather, dry/burnt earth in layers. Long finish. This easily as a few decades and will no doubt evolve, but will it get better? Perhaps, but it is fantastic right now. This was about $200 on release, but for a wine this good, this is reasonable.

In putting together a list of the top California Cabernets, there is sure to be some disagreement. I tried to include those wines that have a track record, the wineries still making great wines, those that seemed to have the commitment for the future and some personal favorites. I am sure I left some out. 1. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select – It’s always hard to name the number one wine. But this has a track record that’s very long. Even in less than stellar vintages, it is an outstanding wine. They just don’t seem to make a dud. My only complaint is the price at over $200 a bottle. But, in comparison to other Napa Cabs or elsewhere in the world, this is a fair price.

This is the third review on Intowine for this wine and all three score 100 points. This is a great wine! It is debatable how long this will last but betting the over seems like a safe bet. Time will tell of course, This bottle was from Magnum that got a lot of air prior to serving. Purple in color. The nose has cedar, cassis, blueberries, spice leather and graphite. Clean and deep. This is showing to be the equal of the 2007 and the best wine ever made by Thomas Rivers Brown which is no faint praise. An exceptional bottle of wine that while young now is incredible and may still improve. It will certainly evolve. One can debate if a 100 point wine can get better on a philosophical basis. Wow. This wine should make old bones, but it is so good now, it is not likely to. Stunning wine that seemingly gets better and better. This bottle was consumed over 4 hours and the last glass was the best. Inky purple in color. The nose has cassis, graphite, cedar, blueberries and spice. On the palate, this has a seamless texture. Delicious. Deep and tightly layered; it explodes in the glass. Tons of cassis and blue berries layered with minerality and spice. Medium tannins. Long finish. It does need bigger or spicier food, but it is oh so good.
