2013 Hobel Wine Works Cabernet Sauvignon Engelhard Vineyard, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

This is a Cabernet made by Thomas Rivers Brown, one of Napa's top winemakers. Purple in color. The nose has cassis, some pencil lead and a bit of chocolate and spice. Very tight on the palate, give this time or air. Cassis fruit and spice. Very deep. As it opens up over a couple of hours, it is delicious. Precise. Good balance. Nice finish. Worked well with food. This has some upside to it and really shouldn't be opened for a few years. Should last twenty years though so no hurry.

In putting together a list of the top California Cabernets, there is sure to be some disagreement. I tried to include those wines that have a track record, the wineries still making great wines, those that seemed to have the commitment for the future and some personal favorites. I am sure I left some out. 1. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select – It’s always hard to name the number one wine. But this has a track record that’s very long. Even in less than stellar vintages, it is an outstanding wine. They just don’t seem to make a dud. My only complaint is the price at over $200 a bottle. But, in comparison to other Napa Cabs or elsewhere in the world, this is a fair price.

Nice to try a Hobel with some age on it. This was purchased on release. Still youthful though it is drinking well with a bit of air. This was made by Thomas Rivers Brown. Purple in color with some ruby swirls. The nose is very nice with cassis, cedar, leather, and spice. On the palate, this still has medium tannins. cassis fruit with some underlying dry earthiness. Good balance. Nice finish. It unwinds a bit in the glass showing some layering. Overall, this is maturing nicely. It won't get better but should keep maturing. 2011 was a challenging vintage in Napa but for some wineries it offered a chance to find wines that are ready a bit earlier than most vintages. That was true for Hobel and their winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has cassis, slight spice/oak and a hint of fresh herbs. Medium to full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, there is some depth. Cassis with a bit of an herbal streak. Good balance. Nice finish. This seems to be at peak but should drink well for another eight to ten years.
