This is in a lovely place right now. Deep ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is great with cherries, slight black cherries, violets, spices and just a hint of funk. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great energy and balance. On the palate, this is complex, layered and delicious. Cherries and black cherries with some char, spice and earthiness. Long finish. This is just about at peak right now and should be at this level for five to eight more years, but this will drink well for another five to ten after that. Great on its own, this will work

Rhone Valley & Spanish Rhone-style Wines Tasted at the 2008 Hospice du Rhone Events

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we reported on American Rhone-style wines we tasted at the 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008. We noted that this event was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective because, unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. While this was a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers weren’t represented, there was still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts.

This wine was bought on release and is exactly where it should be at age 21. Deep ruby in color with just a bit of browning at the edges. Clear and bright. The wine initially has some bottle funk but that blows of to reveal a classic CdP nose. Cherries, spice, slight barnyard, a bit of dried cherries and roasted herbs. Medium to full bodied. Great energy and balance. on the palate, this is complex and layered. Cherries, fresh and dried, earthiness and char. Nice balance. Good finish. Wow. One of the best CdP's I have ever had. This is in a great place right now. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is incredible with black cherries, black raspberries, violets, garrique and slight char. Full bodied. Sexy, voluptuous texture. Great energy and balance. On the palate, this is just about at peak. Complex and deep with layers of fruit and minerality. Flavors of black cherries, black raspberries, spice, earthiness and char. Long finish. This is great on its own and would be excellent with Roasted Duck. Drink over the next ten years.

This house and this wine don't seem to get the attention that they deserve despite the critics loving them. It is a blend of 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is big with black raspberries, black cherries, slight plums, spices, floral notes and roasted meats. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great energy. On the palate, this is delicious. Complex. Layers of black raspberries, plums and black cherries with some char and spice. Long finish. This is getting close to peak and should drink well for another eight to twelve years. Great
