2013 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Hominis Fides, France, Rhone, Wine Review

This is always one of the top Gigondas of the vintage. 2013 was, however, a below average vintage. This is still an outstanding vintage but this wine is expensive for Gigondas. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is tight but opens to show earthy black raspberries with a bit of smoke. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Nice mouthfeel. Slightly bitter (not in a bad way) cherries with black cherries over char. Slight tannins. Moderate finish. This is tight and may still improve a bit. It should drink well for the next seven to ten years. This will work better with food. Braised ribs should be a good match.

Gigondas is often thought of as a "poor man's" Chateauneuf du Pape and for a lot of reasons that is true. But, the best Gigondas producers are certainly on a par with many of the better Chateauneufs and Saint-Cosme is certainly one of the best Gigondas producers. At 12 years from vintage, this seems to be at about peak. 2006 was a very good if not remarkable vintage. Being caught between the classic 2005 and the ostentatious 2007, it got a bit over looked. Gigondas is often thought of as a "lesser" Chateauneuf du Pape. That can be good as in pricing or bad as in quality. This is neither. It is one of the best Gigondas produced and it is not inexpensive. That said, if you like CdP, you will love this. Purple in color with some ruby hues, mostly opaque and bright. This is the basic Gigondas from the top producer of Gigondas. They also make a variety of single vineyard wines. The price on these has gone up over the years with the success of the winery and so, they now sell for as much or more than many Chateauneufs. This is a blend of , 70% Grenache with the rest Syrah and Mourvèdre. Purple in color, ruby at the rim and shimmering bright. The nose has black cherries, black pepper, slight black olive and spice. This is a producer who first got recognition for their fantastic Gigondas wines. They have since expanded their releases all over the southern and northern Rhone. Their Chateauneuf is also stellar. It is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 10% each of Syrah and Cinsault. Deep ruby in color, purple at the core. The nose is tight upon opening. With air, raspberries, black raspberries and mineral/gravel emerge. On the palate, this is delicious. Lots of black cherry fruit with some raspberries. Medium tannins. Bright acidity. This is one of, if not the best, producer of Gigondas, but they also make great Chateauneuf. It is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, and 5% Cinsault. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has prunes, cherries, garrigue and slight floral notes. Medium bodied. Young but nice complexity. Tight layers or plums, spice and earth. Lively. Nice finish. This needs a couple more years until peak but should drink well for the next twelve to fifteen years.
