Purple in color with Ruby swirls, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is earthy with black cherry fruit. Light tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, flavors of plums and black cherries. Long finish. This has some depth and complexity. Likely at (or maybe just past) peak. Drink over the next few years.
Does Beaujolais age? This was opened at a recent tasting of Beaujolais to show that it really does. Not even a specific Cru, with the original $15 price sticker still on the bottle, this was fresh and drinking well. Is it an amazing wine? No, but it is solid and enjoyable. Ruby in color with some darker swirls. The nose has fresh cherry fruit and slight candy. Medium bodied. No tannins. On the palate, cherries with some depth. Good acidity. Nice finish. This drinks nicely on its own and would work great with a mushroom pizza.
A personal favorite of mine, from an excellent vintage. This wine still needs some time to come together, but I think it will. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is tight. It does open to show black cherries and black raspberries with a bit of spice. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, black cherry fruit. Lush texture. Good acidity. Nice finish. Give this wine a nice decant or cellar for a few more years. Drink over the next ten years. Nice on its own, this will work well with food. Roasted duck or other fowl would be a good choice.
This wine is named for the three vineyards that the fruit comes from: Rochegrès, Roche Noire and La Rochelle. The winery is also known as Domaine Vissoux. Ruby in color with slight purple hues. The nose is lighter but nice with cherries, and a slight celery seed note. Interesting. Medium bodied. On the palate, nice cherry fruit with the celery seed coming thru. Good acidity. Long finish. 2009 was such a great vintage in Beaujolais. This bottle was purchased on release and stored well since. It is drinking great. Over two nights, it was actually a bit more interesting on night 2. Deep ruby/purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has cherries, sour cherries, slight spice and slight damp forest floor. On the palate, the sour cherries come out. Great texture. Depth with some complexity. Blind, one might be tempted to guess Oregon Pinot Noir. Long tart finish. This is very food friendly for all but the hearties of dishes. This is an outstanding wine. If you are not looking at Cru Beaujolais wines then you are missing out on one of the real value regions for red wines anywhere. This one retails for $30 but if you're lucky, you can find it for less. The bottle I tried was $20. Ruby in color, a bit muddled. The nose is great.
