2007 Terry Hoage Vineyards Syrah The Hedge, USA, California, Paso Robles, Wine Review

Nice to revisit this wine from an excellent vintage. Still drinking well for those, like me, that enjoy a full throttle Syrah once in a while. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper, slight bacon fat, and roasted herbs. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this has juicy black raspberry fruit with lots of depth. Good lively acidity. Long finish. This is full mature but should continue to drink well for another five to ten years. It works better on its own but will work with big foods. Spicy Indian foods are a good match.

This is a classic example of how well these high octane Syrah's from Paso Robles can age and mature given the chance. The bottle lists this at 16.5% ABV. On release, many naysayers said it would fall apart after five years. They complained about the heat and taste, many without even tasting it first. Now, I will admit that I liked this wine young. And, at age 17, I liked it even better. Of course, if you didn't like it young, you probably won't like it now I suppose. But, it clearly has not fallen apart. This is a blend of 50% Syrah, 34% Grenache, 16% Mourvedre checking in at 15.7% ABV. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, plums, black pepper, slight roasted herbs and meats and a bit of violets. Full bodied. Great lush texture but with lively acidity. So easy to drink with no noticeable alcohol on the nose or palate. Black raspberries over roasted earth with some herbs. Long finish. This is young but accessible. The 2011 Saxums are drinking beautifully right now. It was a difficult vintage but Justin Smith and Saxum excelled. The wines are a bit more ready than most vintages, but that's fine. Pop and pour. 51% Grenache and 49% Syrah. Inky purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, dark chocolate, black pepper and roasted herbs. With air more chocolate comes out along with a bit or roasted meats. On the palate, this has a lovely juicy yet muscular texture. This is 57% Syrah, 29% Grenache, and 14% Mourvedre. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black raspberries, black cherries, black pepper, slight roasted meats and herbs, and spice. Full bodied. Fruit forward. Quite tasty. This is drinking well if still young. Lots of jammy black raspberry fruit over char and some black pepper. Maybe a bit of black cherries. This is a real crowd pleaser. It should continue to evolve over the next ten to twelve years. it drinks great on its own and will work well with roasted veggies or meats.
