2005 Ridge Petite Sirah Dynamite Hill York Creek Vineyards, USA, California, Spring Mountain, Wine Review

The cork crumbled on opening and the wine was decanted. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has boysenberries, char, slight ink scent and a bit of blueberries. Full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, the blueberries are more pronounced and plenty of boysenberries with underlying char. Still has youthful energy. Good finish. This is drinking well now but still young. No harm opening or letting it age another ten to fifteen years. It probably won't get much better. It will work well with pizza, burger but also roasts and grilled foods.

Very nice showing for this. Seems to be just about at peak, of course, noting that Zinfandel matures earlier and Petite Sirah later. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has boysenberries, black cherries, raspberries along with some leather and minerality. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has a nice complexity. Also very tasty. Layers of fruit (black and red raspberries) with some underlying minerality. Nice finish. This should have another five to seven more years and probably more. This is a nice tale on Petite Sirah made from Howell Mountain grapes. It is quite intense and will need some cellar time to reach full potential. Inky purple in color. Opaque and bright. The nose is tight but has boysenberries, slight pencil lead and slight gravel notes. On the palate, firm tannins. Boysenberry fruit. Very tightly packed. Persistent finish. It is quite tasty but clearly will have more to offer in five to ten years. It should be best in seven to fifteen or so years. This will drink better with food such as roasts, stews and casseroles. Another tremendous wine from Halcon, which, sadly for us, has just been sold. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with boysenberries, plums, black pepper and char. Full bodied but with vibrancy and energy. On the palate, black raspberries, plums and char underneath. Great acidity. Long finish. This wine won't hit its peak for another ten years or so and should drink well for another twenty after that. Given its price though, its worth drinking a few on the young side. Delicious. I absolutely loved this wine. And for $32, this is a great value. What I like about Petite Syrah is that it is not as boisterous as Syrah but in a similar vein. The two grapes are not (at least closely) related. Many times it seems Petite producers try to "correct" for this and get too much ripeness. It is a fine line, but this wine really does a wonderful job of expressing the true qualities of Petite. It does need some air and time to open, so keep that in mind if drinking now.
