2004 Turley Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

At a recent tasting of Turley Hayne Petite Syrah, this was the oldest and the group's WOTN (although curiously it got zero first place votes). Purple in color, opaque but slightly flat. The nose has boysenberries, char and an earthy streak that kept improving all night. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, flavors of black raspberries, slight plums and char. Complex and deep. Long finish. This seems to be at peak so probably best to drink sooner than later. At age 22, every bottle will be different. It is great on its own and will work well with hearty foods such as Primer Rib or Roasted Eggplant.

While a step down from the 2004, this bottle showed well, too. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is dusty with black raspberries, slight chocolate but also a "tinny" quality. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Nice acidity. On the palate, flavors of black raspberries with some underlying char. Long finish. This is probably a bit past peak but still drinking well. That said, these should be probably be consumed sooner than later. It drinks well on its own but would be better with food. This would go well with a hearty Chili.

A gorgeous wine that may not yet be at peak. Purple in color, shimmering bright. The nose has boysenberries, chocolate, slight graphite, char and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. Very well balanced. On the palate, flavors of black raspberries, char and slight chocolate. Long finish. This does not seem to be at peak yet but getting there. If opening soon, a one hour decant would be a good idea. Drink over the next ten to twenty years. This drinks well on its own and will work with hearty foods. This would be nice with Lamb Stew or Quinoa with Roasted Squash.

A good showing for this wine which seems to be just about at peak. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is dusty with black raspberries, chocolate, char and spice. Full bodied. Medium to firm tannins. On the palate, flavors of black raspberries with spice and char. Long finish. This won't get better but one should still have another five to eight years (based on this bottle) before it starts going downhill. it is nice on its own but probably better with food. It would go nicely with Indian cuisine.

I absolutely loved this wine. And for $32, this is a great value. What I like about Petite Syrah is that it is not as boisterous as Syrah but in a similar vein. The two grapes are not (at least closely) related. Many times it seems Petite producers try to "correct" for this and get too much ripeness. It is a fine line, but this wine really does a wonderful job of expressing the true qualities of Petite. It does need some air and time to open, so keep that in mind if drinking now. Petite Syrah or Petite Sirah? Same grape and one that can really age well. At age 26, this is drinking quite well. Purple in color. The nose has boysenberries, spice and dust. With air, a bit of gravel. On the palate, this is full bodied. Boysenberry fruit, dried fruit and slight dry earth. Slight depth and complexity. Tannins all resolved. Good acidity. Moderate finish. This probably is a bit past prime but certainly should continue to provide good drinking for five to ten more years as it slides downhill. It really needs food. Burgers or steaks would be great.
