2003 Château Mouton Rothschild, France, Bordeaux, Pauillac, Wine Review

It is always a pleasure to drink a first Growth. 2003 was an extremely hot vintage all across Europe. This vintage is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Purple in color, opaque and bright. Great nose. A bit of funk, some cigar, plenty of cassis, and leather. Full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, this seems about at peak maturity. Plenty of depth. Layers of cassis with some tobacco notes and earthiness. Long finish. Just a fantastic wine. This drinks great on its own and would work well with roasted meats or veggies. It won't get better but still has ten to fifteen years left at this level depending on storage.

Lots to say about this wine, but first, why it was opened. My friend Chris is about to retire. Way back in 1986 or so, Chris was convinced to spend $30 for a 375ml bottle of this wine. Since that time, he has waited for the right special occasion to open the bottle. Luckily for me (since I din't meet Chris until around 2010), this bottle is known to maturing at a glacial pace. Tasted blind, I guessed Napa Merlot (Screaming Eagle The Flight). It was so open and accessible, it was quite surprising to find out it was a five year old First Growth. Gorgeous wine. This is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 9% Merlot. On release, this seemed to be a bit of a disappointment for a First Growth form a great vintage. At this stage, 33 years later, it has closed the gap somewhat and while perhaps not as good as a 1989 tasted side by side, it was till good. Ruby/brown in color. Always a treat to drink a First growth. This is made in an old school style at a time when Bordeaux was kicking it up a bit. Accordingly, this wine was "disappointing" to many people on release (especially for the 1990 vintage). But thirty some years down the road, this wine is still proving its merits and in fact, this was better than a bottle consumed a few years ago. Purple in color, opaque and bright. What a treat to drink. Ruby/brown in color, mostly opaque and bright. This is apparently a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. Georg Baselitz is the artist who did the label. Perfectly mature if even slightly past, this bottle was singing. The nose has cassis, dried fruits, cigar box, dust and spice. Full bodied.
