Ruby in color with a touch of browning, clear and bright. The nose is classic with cherries, slight barnyard and spice. The tannins seem resolved and this is at peak. Layers of fruit and tertiary notes. Complex. Cherries, earthy dried fruit and flowers. Good acidity. Slight barnyard on the palate. Good finish. This is exactly what this wine should be at this point. If you live that, you will love this. Better with food such as a stew or vegetarian chili. Drink over the next five years.

Rhone Valley & Spanish Rhone-style Wines Tasted at the 2008 Hospice du Rhone Events

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we reported on American Rhone-style wines we tasted at the 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008. We noted that this event was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective because, unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. While this was a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers weren’t represented, there was still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts.

This wine was bought on release and is exactly where it should be at age 21. Deep ruby in color with just a bit of browning at the edges. Clear and bright. The wine initially has some bottle funk but that blows of to reveal a classic CdP nose. Cherries, spice, slight barnyard, a bit of dried cherries and roasted herbs. Medium to full bodied. Great energy and balance. on the palate, this is complex and layered. Cherries, fresh and dried, earthiness and char. Nice balance. Good finish. This is drinking great and pretty much at peak. Pop and pour, it took about 20 minutes to open and was good to go. Purple in color with some ruby swirls with slight browning. A bit flat and a bit shiny. The nose is great with black cherries, spice, dried flowers, plums, minerals and slight char. Medium bodied. A nice backbone of acidity. The palate has plenty of fruit left with plums and black cherries. Underneath there is some minerality, spice and slight earthiness. This has nice layering and complexity. Nice finish. Delicious. Some people will tell you that Chateauneuf du Pape does not age. Well, this is a top wine from a top vintage and at age 19, it is doing just fine with years left. Deep ruby in color. The nose is great with black cherries, slight cherries, hints of garrique and spice, and just a bit of woodiness. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has fresh and vibrant black cherry fruit with some cherries but also some dried red fruits. Nice layering of fruit and earthiness. Good finish. The wines of Pegau can reach great heights, but they often have a lot of barnyard notes which are not for everyone. I love them. Purple in color with ruby swirls. Most opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, cigar, cedar and yes, barnyard. Medium bodied. Lower acidity. On the palate, black cherries with some earthiness. Complex. Getting pretty close to peak. Long finish. This is great on its own, but probably better with food. A nice beef stew would be classic but it would work with a bowl of chili, too. Drink over the next five to ten years.
