2001 Château Rieussec, France, Bordeaux, Sauternes, Wine Review

Wow. This is really an amazing wine. It is a beautiful orange/gold color, clear and bright. The nose is great with orange peel, Creme Brulee, some pineapple, apricots, and slight honeyed quality. Full bodied. Viscous. Great acidity. On the palate, this is just starting to show some maturity (at least this bottle). It is sweet, not cloying. Mouth coating flavors of honey, apricots, caramel/burnt sugar, and citrus. Long, long finish. Complex and deep. This is contemplative. While it might work with some desserts, it is better to just sip and savor. Drink over the next thirty years.

Wow, this is stunning. What a great vintage. Medium gold in color with slight darker hues, clear and bright. The nose is big with apricots, honey, orange peel and crème brulée. Full bodied. Viscous texture. Excellent acidity. Great energy and balance. On the palate, this is deep and complex. Layers of fruits, dried fruits and other tastes. Apricots, honey, oranges and caramel. Long finish. This is fantastic on its own and will work great with a plain cookie or cake. Drink over the next thirty years.

What a fantastic wine. Deep golden in color. Very pretty. On the nose, there is honey, sea air, and apricots. On the palate, this is very complex. Apple, honey, some citrus (almost a burnt sugar-ish citrus if that makes sense). With air, some creme brulee emerges. Long finish. This is sweet but not as sweet as I expected and no where near cloying. Good acidity. The wine has decades left.

Always a pleasure to drink Rieussec. It is one of the great wines from Sauternes. This year it also comes in a spiffy new bottles that is very different. A blend of 89% Sémillon, 9% Sauvignon Blanc, 2% Muscadelle according to the winemaker's notes. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with apricot, orange zest, slight honey and a bit of lemon. Full bodied. Viscous. Sweet, not cloying. Good acidity. On the palate, this is delicious. Orange zest, lemon and honey.
