Tuscany is undoubtedly one of Italy’s most important wine regions. Super Tuscans and Brunello’s command high prices, however Tuscany also produces an array of wines from lesser-known regions like this excellent Lagone. Comprised of 60% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon, and 10% cabernet franc, this wine is, almost literally, a steal. There is light blueberry, black berry, black cherry, red plum, and the judicious use of oak with a surprisingly hefty tannic structure, giving weight and balance to this red. To find a wine of this caliber at this price merely proves two things: that there are many value wines available in the marketplace, and that Italy excels at it.
