2024 M Cellars Grüner Veltliner, USA, Ohio, Grand River Valley, Wine Review

Perhaps the finest winery in Ohio, Matt and Tara Meinecke make a full range of wines along the shores of Lake Erie. This is an interesting take on GV. The label lists 10% abv. Gold/green in color, clear and bright. The nose is tight but opens to show slight apple, limes and a touch of salinity. Light to medium bodied. On the palate, this has a sweet/tart thing going on somewhat like tart lemonade that is also sweet especially on the finish. This is easy to drink and will work well with some foods. A nice choice with spicy Hunan or Thai food. Drink over the next year or so. This wine should be popular in the Tasting Room on a Friday night.

This continues to be a delightful take on Gruner from the Pacific Northwwest. Light golden with green hues, clear and bright. The nose has granny smith apples, limes and minerality. Medium bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, apples and limes. Nice finish. This is an easy drinking wine that is nice on its own but a bit better with food. Lighter foods such as chicken or tuna salad will work nicely. Drink over the next three to five years.

Over the last few vintages, this has become one of my favorite inexpensive go to whites. It is tasty, unique and affordable. At $20, direct from the winery if you can't find it locally, this is a really interesting version of Gruner. Light silver/green/gold in color. The nose has canned peaches, limes and minerals. On the palate, this is much fatter than the Austrian versions and more fruit. Canned peaches and minerals come thru. A tart citrus as well. Good acidity. Food friendly. Nice finish. I would drink these in the first few years. It might last longer but that verve won't

Saying this is my favorite Washington (or even Domestic) Gruner Veltliner is faint praise given the paucity of producers. Let's just say this is an excellent white wine and a terrific value. Light gold/green in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with granny smith apples, slight lime and lots of minerality. Maybe a bit of a floral note, too. Medium bodied. Slightly oily texture. This is a great take on Gruner. Very different from the Austrian versions but every bit as good. Pale silvery green/gold in color. The nose has apples, slight lemon peel and slight white pepper. On the palate, this has just a hint of sweetness to it. Nicely balanced with acidity but there is still some green apple fruit. Nice finish. This drinks well on its own especially outside on a hot day. It works nicely with lighter foods. It probably should be consumed in the next three to five years.

This is an interesting take on this varietal more known in Austria than Washington state. Light green/gold in color and very pale. The nose is nice with a lemon/lime quality but also a bit of pear and slight asparagus note. On the palate, this has a tart lemon/lime note. Slightly oily viscous texture. A hint of sweetness but good acidity to work with it. Still fresh but seems a bit rounder than on release. It will be interesting to see how this ages though I would recommend drinking most of them in the next three years. It will work with lighter foods or on its own.
