2021 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

Detert is often more well known for its Cabernet Franc but they make a very nice Cabernet Sauvignon as well. It does contain 3% Cabernet Franc. Purple in color, slight ruby rim, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, cassis, slight tobacco, cdar and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. Good balance. On the palate, flavors of cassis, slight tobacco/forest floor note and char. Great energy. Long finish. This is young and will undoubtedly improve by a point or two as it matures. It drinks well now though on its own and should be food friendly with roasted meats or fowl. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

These days, whenever I mention that I picked up a bottle of Cabernet Franc during one of my tasting trips, I always get a knowing nod of approval from my fellow wine enthusiasts. Cabernet Franc is definitely gaining attention among American consumers, and it has slowly begun to emerge as more than just a mere blending grape for Cabernet Sauvignon. I’ve pondered Cabernet Franc’s recent rise in popularity, and have developed a theory regarding the varietal’s growing niche within the American market: Over the past 30 years, U.S. consumers have come to accept Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as two of the standards among fine red wine.

During a recent visit to the Napa Valley, I had a chance to meet with Tom Garrett. Tom is part of the Detert Family of wines who own a portion of the historic To Kalon vineyard. The Detert's and the MacDonalds are cousins whose lineage goes back to a common owner of a parcel of the vineyard from the early 1950's. The Detert's portion grows mostly Cabernet Franc although there is some Cabernet Sauvignon. This particular bottling is their top Cabernet Franc and it is as good as any made anywhere. Detert is one of the owners of a section of the To Kalon vineyard. Way back in the day they used to sell to Robert Mondavi. For my money, they make the best Cabernet Franc in Napa and some of the best in the world. While it is not inexpensive, for the quality, it is well priced (in Napa terms). Definitely a mailing list to be on. Purple in color, a thin ruby line at the rim. The nose is great with black cherries, cigar tobacco, slight char and a bit of earthiness. Detert makes some of the best Cabernet Franc in California. Purple in color with ruby swirls, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, cassis, fresh tobacco, spice and slight mocha note. Full bodied. Wonderful lush texture. Great balance. On the palate, this is young with firm tannins. Loads of black cherry fruit (although certainly not a fruit bomb), along with some cassis and some underlying char. Long finish. Delicious. It really unwinds over a few hours. From one of the premier producers of Cabernet Franc in California. The vines are part of what was historically To Kalon vineyard. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, slight cigar tobacco and cedar. Wonderful texture. Medium tannins. Nice balance. On the palate, lots of black cherries, some cassis with underlying spice. Lots of energy. Long finish. Delicious. This should last another ten to fifteen years. Great on its own, better with food. Roast duck or chicken would be great.
