2016 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Franc Oakville, USA, California, Napa, Oakville, Wine Review

From one of the premier producers of Cabernet Franc in California. The vines are part of what was historically To Kalon vineyard. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, slight cigar tobacco and cedar. Wonderful texture. Medium tannins. Nice balance. On the palate, lots of black cherries, some cassis with underlying spice. Lots of energy. Long finish. Delicious. This should last another ten to fifteen years. Great on its own, better with food. Roast duck or chicken would be great.

These days, whenever I mention that I picked up a bottle of Cabernet Franc during one of my tasting trips, I always get a knowing nod of approval from my fellow wine enthusiasts. Cabernet Franc is definitely gaining attention among American consumers, and it has slowly begun to emerge as more than just a mere blending grape for Cabernet Sauvignon. During a recent visit to the Napa Valley, I had a chance to meet with Tom Garrett. Tom is part of the Detert Family of wines who own a portion of the historic To Kalon vineyard. The Detert's and the MacDonalds are cousins whose lineage goes back to a common owner of a parcel of the vineyard from the early 1950's. The Detert's portion grows mostly Cabernet Franc although there is some Cabernet Sauvignon. This particular bottling is their top Cabernet Franc and it is as good as any made anywhere. Detert is one of the owners of a section of the To Kalon vineyard. Way back in the day they used to sell to Robert Mondavi. For my money, they make the best Cabernet Franc in Napa and some of the best in the world. While it is not inexpensive, for the quality, it is well priced (in Napa terms). Definitely a mailing list to be on. Purple in color, a thin ruby line at the rim. The nose is great with black cherries, cigar tobacco, slight char and a bit of earthiness. This is from the To Kalon vineyard in Napa. Truly one of the best and certainly historic vineyards on the valley floor. One of the best Cab Francs made in Napa. Purple in color. The nose has cassis, black cherries, slight cigar tobacco. Nice. On the palate, this is ripe and avoids the green pepper that sometimes is in Cab Franc (for better and worse). It has great black cherry fruit, some black raspberries. Depth though still quite tight. This is young and needs a decade IMO. Long finish.

From the heart of the historic To Kalon vineyard on the Napa Valley floor. This is made in limited quantities although they also make an even more limited version. This is $80 which is pretty fair for one of the best Cab Francs that Napa produces. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, slight cigar box, and some anise. On the palate, this is young but drinking well. Black cherries, some cherries, forest floor and spice layered in the glass. Medium tannins. Good balance. Nice finish. Certainly some upside to this as this should mature and age for another decade or more.
