2019 North Coast Wine Club Syrah, USA, Washington, Yakima Valley, Wine Review

This is made from Syrah grown in Washington state, shipped cold to northeast Ohio where it is vinified. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, slight black raspberries, cloves, spice, slight burnt rubber (not a bad thing), and some chocolate. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is cooler climate in style. Boysenberries, char and slight chocolate. Good acidity. Moderate finish. This is nice on its own but really begging for food. It would work very well with Turkish food (for the adventurous). Drink over the next 5 to eight years.

Merlot vs Syrah: Which Varietal Blooms Brightest in Washington?

Say “Oregon” and Pinot Noir comes to mind. Argentina? Malbec. And who can say “Shiraz” without thinking of Australia? But what grape will Washington wine country claim as it’s own as it expands in production and popularity? There are so many red treasures in this state, sometimes it is hard to say. But after my luscious Saturday tasting, I’m thinking Syrah and Merlot may duke it out for the prize.

The label on this lists Santa Ynez Valley which is in Santa Barbara County, California. The grapes were grown there and then shipped to Ohio where the wine was produced. Interestingly, the label also indicates that this is only sold in Ohio. Garnet in color, purple at the core, mostly clear and bright. The nose is tight but shows boysenberries, cherries, and a bit of cedar on the nose. Medium bodied. Strong backbone of acidity. On the palate, black cherries and slight boysenberries. This will work better with food. Cassoulet would be a good choice.

Reynvaan makes some great Syrah's in Washington state. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice with boysenberries, slight burnt rubber, black pepper and slight bacon fat. Full bodied. Nice acidity. On the palate, the boysenberries come thru over a nice minerality. Long finish. This is drinking well right now. it is not robust but very concentrated. Drink over the next eight to ten years. This will work well with Indian food or stews.

This has really opened nicely since I last tried it. Still young, but delicious. Perhaps the best wine from Washington that I have had. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, boysenberries, black cherries, black olives and tarragon. No burnt rubber that sometimes shows up in Washington Syrah. Full bodied. On the palate, the black and purple fruits dominate. Black pepper. Slight black olive with underlying minerals/rocks. Wonderful lush but fluid texture. Long finish. Delicious. Another stunning Syrah from this winery! Syrahs from Washington are unique. They really show the terroir. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, burnt rubber, black olives, smoked meats and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great balance. On the palate, black raspberries, crushed rocks, and black pepper. Long finish. Delicious. This has a certain elegance in it not often found in new world Syrah. No harm opening now, but it should continue to mature and maybe even get better.
