This is a certified organic Syrah from Washington state. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, blueberries, smoked meats, thyme and dark chocolate. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, great acidity. Flavors of black raspberries, blueberries, slight dark chocolate and char. Good finish. This drinks well on its own and will work well with food. This would work well with smoked sausage dishes. Drink over the next ten years.

Merlot vs Syrah: Which Varietal Blooms Brightest in Washington?

Say “Oregon” and Pinot Noir comes to mind. Argentina? Malbec. And who can say “Shiraz” without thinking of Australia? But what grape will Washington wine country claim as it’s own as it expands in production and popularity? There are so many red treasures in this state, sometimes it is hard to say. But after my luscious Saturday tasting, I’m thinking Syrah and Merlot may duke it out for the prize.

This is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and a little Syrah from three different vineyards in the Red Mountain AVA or Washington state. At 12 years from vintage it seems to be in a great spot although it should have at least 5 more years before starting to slowly go downhill. Purple in color. The nose is nice with cherries, coffee, leather, slight chocolate, cassis and tobacco. On the palate, this is still fresh with lot of fruit; cherries and black raspberries. This is 100% Syrah from Washington state. Inky purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is boysenberry, black pepper, slight roasted meats and a hint of burnt rubber. Medium to full bodied. Delicious. On the palate, lush black raspberry fruit with underlying char. Also some black pepper. Very smooth. Long finish. This is still young and will no doubt continue to improve for another five to seven years. It should drink well for ten to fifteen more after that. Drinks well on its own and will work with bigger foods especially roasts or off the grill.

One of my favorite Washington Syrahs, the 2016 is right up there. These are big Syrahs, especially for Washington, but they will come down with age. inky purple in color, ruby at the rim. Opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, black pepper and a slight floral (violets?) note. Full bodied. Wonderful, juicy texture. Tons of black raspberry fruit on the palate with an underlying roasted herb note.

Another stunning Syrah from this winery! Syrahs from Washington are unique. They really show the terroir. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, burnt rubber, black olives, smoked meats and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great balance. On the palate, black raspberries, crushed rocks, and black pepper. Long finish. Delicious. This has a certain elegance in it not often found in new world Syrah. No harm opening now, but it should continue to mature and maybe even get better.
