2019 Comando G La Bruja de Rozas, Spain, Madrid, Gredos, Wine Review

I had the 2015 in a visit to the winery in the Sierra de Gredos mountains just west of Madrid. It was interesting to revisit, this time at a wine bar in Charlotte, NC. This is one of their "Village" level wines which is also much more affordable. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has sour cherries, some black cherries and thyme. Light tannins. On the palate, cherry, licorice and spice. Great texture. Delicious. Nice on its own but better with food. Nice finish. This is Grenache but it is different than most with a bit of a "Pinot" profile to it as well. Drink over the next ten years.

Rhone Valley & Spanish Rhone-style Wines Tasted at the 2008 Hospice du Rhone Events

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we reported on American Rhone-style wines we tasted at the 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008. We noted that this event was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective because, unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. While this was a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers weren’t represented, there was still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts.

Purchased at Foxcroft Wine Bar in Charlotte, NC. This is 100% Garnacha (Grenache) from old wines in the mountains just west of Madrid. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, pomegranate, spice and wild herbs. Full bodied. On the palate, black cherries, some cherries and spice. There is some depth. Long finish. Tasty. This is young but drinking nicely. Good on its own or with food. It would work well with Baked Ham.

Some wines are special for more than what's in the bottle. Such is this bottle. My wife and I visited the Gredos are just west of Madrid, Spain and few years ago and were blow away by the beauty, the quality of wine and the people making it in an area that I had never heard of prior to planning the trip. Purchased at the winery back in 2017. Gredos is in the mountains just west of Madrid, Spain. It is 100% Garnacha grown at high altitude. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is interesting with black cherries, cherries, some pomegranate, but also thyme and char. Full bodied. Light to medium tannins. On the palate, this is very concentrated. Not a blowsy wine but very persistent. Black raspberries, black cherries, and cherries with underlying char and slight herbal note. Complex and deep. Long finish. From one of the more interesting vineyard areas anywhere, just to the west of Madrid and at around 3,000 feet in altitude with sandy soils over granite, come some of the more interesting Garnacha (Grenache) wines to be found. This one is amazing. Purple in color with ruby swirls, mostly opaque and bright.
