2019 Barboursville Vineyards Paxxito, USA, Virginia, Wine Review

This dessert wine is a 50/50 blend of Moscato and Vidal Blanc from Virginia. Deep golden/amber in color, clear and bright. The nose is honeyed with peach. Viscous texture. Nice acidity. Sweet but not cloying. On the palate, canned peaches with a touch of honey. A bit of sour citrus candy on the finish which is nice. A little goes a long way. This is a very nice dessert wine that is great on its own and would work with a not too sweet cookie, perhaps short bread. Drink over the next ten years. It comes in a 375ml bottle.

From a winery in northwest Ohio along the Lake Erie shore. Vidal Blanc, is a hybrid grape that does very well in this area and makes wonderful dessert wines. This is a true Ice Wine and not artificially produced. Deep golden in color. The nose is pretty with a canned peaches in heavy syrup quality to it. On the palate, there are more peaches along with a bit of orange peel and slight bitter honey. Good acidity. Nice finish. This would go with anything that a Sauternes would go with. Back in the days before Prohibition, the wines from the Lake Erie Islands far outsold the wines from Sonoma. Peruse and older text and you will see that these islands produced some of the top wines this country produced. Nowadays, the islands mostly serve as a summer weekend destination for fun and cheap beer, but there is still some wine being made in the area. This is an artificially frozen dessert wine from the Scorched Earth Vineyard. It is made from Syrah grapes that were harvested at 37 brix. The residual sugar 8% and 14.5% ABV. It has held up quite well and is drinking very well, perhaps, on better now. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, a simple syrup note, plums and chocolate covered raisins. On the palate, this is drinking well. Sweet, not cloying. Very port-like. Not a ton of complexity. Goes quite well with a bit of cheese or chocolate. This was a one off and only made this one time.

Looking for a nice value in dessert wines? This one retails for around $15 and is nice. Golden in color. The nose has nice pineapple fruit, with a bit of lychee and peach. On the palate, the pineapple carries thru. This is sweet. A bit of honey. Nice to have a couple of ounces on its own.

This is made by MIchael Angelo's Winery which is located in Northeast, Ohio. The grapes are grown in California and shipped (2-day) to Ohio to be processed. Tasted from two bottles, the second was significantly better than the first (not sure if the first had been open, was from the same vintage, etc) so this note is based on the second, freshly opened bottle.
