2019 Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon, USA, California, Paso Robles, Wine Review

Friends brought this over. This winery is one a few that are generating lots of buzz for Cabernet Sauvignon in Paso Robles. This is fruit forward in style but by no means a simple wine. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cassis, tobacco, black cherry and spices. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, lush cassis and black cherry fruit. Depth. Long finish. This drinks well now but probably should improve with a few more years of cellaring. Drink over the next ten to twelve years. This would go great with a roast or a steak.

Top 50 California Cabernet Sauvignons to Try Before You Quit Drinking (a non-dump bucket list if you will!)

In putting together a list of the top California Cabernets, there is sure to be some disagreement. I tried to include those wines that have a track record, the wineries still making great wines, those that seemed to have the commitment for the future and some personal favorites. I am sure I left some out. 1. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select – It’s always hard to name the number one wine. But this has a track record that’s very long. Even in less than stellar vintages, it is an outstanding wine. They just don’t seem to make a dud. My only complaint is the price at over $200 a bottle. But, in comparison to other Napa Cabs or elsewhere in the world, this is a fair price.

12/28/2018 - So glad I was able to try this again. A friend offered it up and I jumped at the chance to try a clean bottle. The cork was clean to the top with just a bit of red stain on the bottle of the cork. Purple in color. The nose has nice cassis and a fair amount of oak showing itself as spice and cedar. On the palate, this is clean with a nice full texture. Cassis fruit with some lumber and some cedar. There is a nice depth here. Firm tannins. Long finish. This is an interesting wine. It is made by the two brothers who own Daou Vineyards from their very best vines in the mountains west of the 101 Freeway and retails for a very high price. It is their intention with this wine to show that Paso Robles is also capable of producing world class Cabernet Sauvignon. It is certainly the highest priced wine from Paso Robles that I have heard of. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is interesting and unique. This is a very nice value for those looking for a reasonably priced California Cabernet. It is from Paso Robles, an area generally not known for its Cabs. Dark ruby in color. The nose has cherries and slight kirsch notes along with some baking spice and a bit of vanilla. On the palate, this is medium bodied with good acidity. Cherries with some oak. Medium finish. This will improve over the next couple of years as it integrates and should be good for five to seven after that. A nice with with grilled burgers.

When Jerry Lohr started planting Cabernet in Paso Robles in the 1970s most people thought he was crazy. But it turns out that Paso Robles has been quite an exceptional AVA for Cabernet in the Golden State. The combination of Jerry’s years of working with this grape is now seen inside this bottle. It offers wonderful dark fruits - blackberry boysenberry, and huckleberry with only slight elements of red fruit like black cherry and raspberry. On the back palate there is noticeable chocolate/tobacco notes.
