2018 Zum Martin Sepp Grüner Veltliner, Austria, Weinland, Wine Review

This is a basic Gruner that comes in a 1 litre bottle. It retails for $15 which is an excellent value. Also a crown cap for a closure. Light green/gold in color. Clear and bright. The nose is nice with limes, slight asparagus and minerals. On the palate, a lemon/lime quality. Good acidity. Some roundness. Not a ton of depth but some. This should be consumed in the next year but will be drinkable for a few more. It should go well with lighter fare and drinks well on its own. A nice wine to finish off summer.

This is from Austria. Screw capped. Upon pouring, this is noticeably spritzy/frothy. A friend who brought the bottles back from Austria said a bottle consumed last summer was not spritzy. It would appear that this is a separate bottling and best guess, they gave it a shot of CO2 right before bottling. There is a popular drink in Austria made from Gruner Veltliner and Selzer which is essentially a Gruner Spritzer. Perhaps, this is the wineries take on that. This is their "Altar Wine", something the estate was founded to produce 900 years ago. It is made with Gruner Veltliner. Silver gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with slight limes, asparagus, slight white pepper and spice. Light tannins. Light to medium bodied. Very intense on the palate. Meyer lemons, slight lime, hints of white pepper and minerals. Long finish. Good acidity. Refreshing and delicious. This is drinking well already but may still improve. From one of the oldest wineries in Europe and one of the oldest vineyards (first mentioned in print in 511AD), this is a beautiful Gruner. Green/gold/silver in color, clear and bright. The nose is pretty with slight floral notes, asparagus, apples and spice. Full bodied. Crisp acidity. On the palate, this has limes, and slight lemons with underlying acidity. Long finish. Very pretty Gruner. Green/silver/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is floral with green herbs (summer savory?). medium bodied. Light tannins. This was one of the more minerals driven Gruner's tasted with a strong almost "granite" quality. Also some tart lemons. Good finish. This begs for food. Goat cheese would be an excellent match, especially and aged hard version. Drink over the next five years.

Another winner from Knoll in the excellent 2021 vintage. Silvery gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has asparagus, and white pepper. Light tannins. On the palate, this has concentrated lime notes. A bit of asparagus on the finish. Long. Deep. Well balanced. This would go well with lighter foods or even a not too spicy Chinese pork dish. Drink over the next seven to ten years.
