2018 Baron Philippe de Rothschild Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva, Chile, Central Valley, Wine Review

This is a Bordeaux styled blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Carmenere, 11% Syrah, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc from Chile. It is also a very nice value for the quality. Purple at the core with a ruby rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is tight but opens up to cassis, coffee and spice. Nothing green on the nose. On the palate, black cherries, cassis, smoke and fresh tobacco. Medium tannins. Softer texture. This is surprisingly open right from the start. There is a nice complexity. It drinks easily now and should continue for the next ten to twelve years. A nice match for everything from a burger to a roast.

This is a great value wine from Chile. The name Escudo Rojo is a literal Spanish translation of the Rothschild name. Purple/ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, with slight wintergreen and rosemary. Classic Chilean Cabernet notes. Full bodied with big fruit. On the palate, the cassis comes thru along with smoke and some black cherries. Firm tannins. Some depth. This may improve a bit, it needs a few more years to develop to reach peak, and should drink well for the next seven to ten years. Hard to find a better Cab for under $20.

This is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah and 5% Carménère, from the far west of the Colchagua Valley in the Peralillo DO. Gran Reserva in Chile means at least 12.5% abv and that the wine sees some oak. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cassis with an earthy forest floor notes. Medium to full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, it starts off slightly sweet before settling in to a pretty cassis, root beer and anise midpalate. A bit of menthol on the long finish. This is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Carmenere and 1% Petit Verdot, from Palmilla DO, a low-lying area of the Colchagua Valley. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cassis and plums and a bit of warmth. A nice "slippery" texture. Medium tannins. On the palate, cassis with a bit of iodine and slight cherries and tobacco. Another very nice Carménère from Chile and a great value. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, cherries, slight green pepper, some black pepper and char. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. Good balance with nice acidity. On the palate, there is some depth here. Cherries and black cherries with underlying spice and slight smoke. Good finish. This is drinking well now and should continue for another five to ten years. This would be a nice match with meatloaf or burgers.

This is 85%Carménère, 10% Tempranillo, and 5% Petit Verdot. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries raspberries, cranberries along side green peppers and a slight rosemary note. Also some spice. Medium tannins. Complex. Tight layers unwind in the glass. On the palate, cherries, cranberries intertwined with black raspberries and char. Long finish. Delicious. This should drink well for another eight to twelve years. This will work well with roasted fowl. The label says duck or also ratatouille, and that seems like a good suggestion.
