2022 Baron Philippe de Rothschild Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva, Chile, Valle del Maipo, Wine Review

This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc from Chile. Ruby in color with a purple core, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is dusty with black cherries and the slightest green tobacco. Juicy, jellied texture. Medium tannins. On the palate, tart cherries which give way to black cherry fruit. Moderate finish. This took about 30 minutes to open. it drinks nicely on its own and will work with many foods. A nice choice for Burgers or Pizza. Drink over the next five years.

This is a Bordeaux styled blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Carmenere, 11% Syrah, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc from Chile. It is also a very nice value for the quality. Purple at the core with a ruby rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is tight but opens up to cassis, coffee and spice. Nothing green on the nose. This is a higher end wine from Chile. It took about an hour to start firing and then kept improving. Very "new world". It is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The wine is deep ruby with a purple core. On the nose, this is big with black cherries, tobacco, roasted herbs and slight dried cherry and dried floral notes. Full bodied with medium tannins. Big ripe/sweet fruit on the palate. This is a joint project with Baron Philippe Rothschild and Conch y Toro. It is one of the top reds made in Chile although not technically a Cabernet with 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carménère, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Cabernet Franc 10%, Merlot 5%, and Petit Verdot (5%). In Chile this qualifies as a Cabernet but in the EU it does not for example (must be 85%). Purple/ruby in color. The nose has black cherries, black raspberries, spice and smoke. Medium bodied. On the palate, this is ripe with good black cherry fruit. Light tannins. Nice acidity. Seems to be close to peak. Nice finish. Drink over the next seven to ten years. Drinks well on its own, this would work well with chili con carne.
