2017 Famille Perrin / Perrin & Fils Gigondas La Gille, France, Rhone, Wine Review

From the Perrin family that is one of the top producers of wine in the Southern Rhone valley. Purple in color, with ruby swirls. Mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice and accessible. It has sweet black raspberries, slight char, slight floral note (lavender?), with spice. Medium bodied. On the palate, flavors of cherries and black cherries with an interesting black licorice note. Good finish. This may still improve over the next few years and should drink well for ten. This drinks well on its own and should work well with chili, stews and bean soups.

Rhone Valley & Spanish Rhone-style Wines Tasted at the 2008 Hospice du Rhone Events

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we reported on American Rhone-style wines we tasted at the 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008. We noted that this event was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective because, unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. While this was a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers weren’t represented, there was still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts.

A classic Gigondas producer. A blend of 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, with the rest made up of Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Ruby in color (a bit lighter), mostly clear and bright. Lovely nose with raspberries and bitter cherries. Some herbs come out with air. On the palate, a slight cough syrup quality, but very tasty. The alcohol is a bit noticeable at first but it blows off with some air. Light tannins. Cherry, bitter cherry and raspberries over a bit of alcohol and char. Some herbs and spice mix in as well. Gigondas is a great place to find nice value in Rhone wines. Montmirail is a good choice for producers in Gigondas. This is a blend of 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, black raspberries, black pepper, and some earthiness. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, the black cherry fruit dominates over an earthy/forest floor base. Nice balance. Mild tannins. Good finish. This is drinking well but may still get a bit better over the next five to seven years. It will drink well for ten to twelve more years

This was given an hour in the decanter after decanting for sediment. Purple/ruby in color. This took a long time to come around. In fact, we gave it another hour and then it finally started to open (2 hours total). The nose is clean with raspberries, garrigue, and black licorice. What a wonderful texture. Silky yet plush and almost seamless. Showing a bit of age, but then with more air it revived even further. Lots of black and red raspberries, black cherries, lavender and spice. This wine is proof that good producers make good wine even in challenging vintages. It is mostly 85% Grenache with the rest Mourvedre and Clairette. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cherries and black cherries, char and slight floral notes. Medium bodied. On the palate, this is chewy with fresh cherry fruit. Some underlying char. Quite tasty. Long finish. This is at peak now and should be drunk over the next five years. A nice drink on its own, it will work better with food. Stews, chili or meatloaf would work well.
