2016 Mercer Petit Verdot Small Lot Horse Heaven Hills, Washington, Wine Review

This is interesting. My understanding is that is mostly a tasting room only wine although there is some limited distribution. Its unclear if this is 100% Petit Verdot, a grape mostly utilized for blending purposes. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black raspberries, vanilla and slight baking spices. Also a bit of a "Bourbon" note on the end. Full bodied. On the palate, lots of boysenberry fruit with firm tannins. Some slight spice and vanilla. Moderate finish. One of those wines that is perhaps more interesting than great but worth checking out and enjoying a glass. It will work better with food and could certainly handle some spicy ribs off the grill. Drink over the next five to seven years.

It's not often that Petite Verdot is bottled on its own. More typically, it is found in small amounts in Bordeaux blends, so this was an interesting treat. Purple in color, opaque and bright. On the nose there are plums, slight blueberries, slight lilac, spice and char. Full bodied. On the palate, the plums come thru strong with slight blueberries and underlying gravel. It is tasty but not complex. More mono-dimensional. Still, it is quite enjoyable to drink and unique. Light tannins. Moderate finish. This probably will go another five to eight years. This is a really interesting wine. From the great Champoux Vineyard in Columbia Valley, Washington. Deep purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has plums, black raspberries and char. Full bodied. Tannins mostly resolved but still present. Nice texture. On the palate, boysenberries with char. Good finish. This is a great wine to get a feel for the Petit Verdot grape. It drinks ok, but is better with food. This would work well with a steak or Prime Rib.

This is a multi-vintage, multi grape cuvee. It is released on a regular basis, this being the 13th iteration. It is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, 12% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Mourvedre. This is really quite good and an excellent value. Deep ruby in color. The nose is dusty and warm with nice black cherry fruit. On the palate, the black cherries come thru along with some sour cherries. Medium tannins. Moderate finish.
