2016 Laurent Martray Brouilly "Combiaty" Vieilles Vignes. France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Wine Review

A really lovely wine for $20. This is a Cru Beaujolais that is drinking great now and should be good for another 7 to 10 years! Deep garnet in color. Clear and bright. The nose has cherries and slight cherry powdered drink mix. On the palate, tart bing cherries with slight tannins. Slightly sour (in a good way) on the finish. In ten years, this should drink like a Pinot of comparable age. It is very food friendly with good acidity. Think anything from Salmon to mushroom dishes to poultry.

Does Beaujolais age? This was opened at a recent tasting of Beaujolais to show that it really does. Not even a specific Cru, with the original $15 price sticker still on the bottle, this was fresh and drinking well. Is it an amazing wine? No, but it is solid and enjoyable. Ruby in color with some darker swirls. The nose has fresh cherry fruit and slight candy. Medium bodied. No tannins. On the palate, cherries with some depth. Good acidity. Nice finish. This drinks nicely on its own and would work great with a mushroom pizza.

Wow. This is impressive. For the Beaujolais purist this might be too much but for the rest of us, this is delicious and a great wine. A prior review can be found on this site from a couple of years ago, but it has improved since then. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, figs, slight black raspberries and a bit of spice. This wine is outstanding. The kinds of wine that makes people realize just how good wines from Beaujolais can be. Ruby in color, slightly dark, clear and bright. The nose has black cherries, spice, slight soy sauce and some anise. On the palate, this has firm tannins. Black cherries, slightly candied with an underlying spice/minerality. Well balance. This needs about three to five more years until peak and then should be good for another five to ten after that. It will work well with fowl or heavier see food dishes.

A new winery for me. This is very nice. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, slight candied cherries and slighter citrus. Medium bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this has tart acidity. Cherries with slight citrus. Nice finish. This drinks well on its own and will work well with food. A nice wine with Mushroom Quiche. Drink over the next five to eight years. A great value!
