2016 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review

Perhaps the top Chianti available, this wine is always good especially from such a great vintage as 2016. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, hay, anise and slight forest floor. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, bold cherries, slight sour cherries, char and slight tea leaves. Great acidity. Long finish. This is drinking well but still on the young side. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years. Nice on its own but really begs for food. Pasta with bolognaise sauce is perfect.

This is one of my favorite Chianti's. Normally, I let the Rancia's rest a bit while I drink the "lesser" Felsina wines. But, I had been hearing such great things about this wine, that I wanted to try one young. Good move. While this should improve, this was wonderful. One of the top Chianti's I have ever had. And, while this is not inexpensive for Chianti, it is for a wine of this quality. Deep ruby in color, a bit lighter at the rim. The nose has cherries, black cherries, some anise, and some tea leaves. Perhaps the top Chianti, and certainly better than most Brunellos. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, some black cherries, hints of anise, smoke and tea leaves. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is versatile and delicious. Cherries, forest floor and char with strong acidity. Long finish. This is still young but will drink well for another twenty years. If drinking soon, give it some air. This is made for food and while nice on its own, is better with food. Pizza or pasta would be great, but this will also work well with braise

One of the best from Chianti. This is a great wine. It retails for under $50 which is expensive for Chianti but a great value for the quality offered. Purple in color, ruby swirls. The nose is great with cherries, tobacco, tea leaves, and a slight pine note. With air, some cedar and earth emerge. On the palate, this has firm tannins still. Lots of dark cherry fruit layered with wet tea leaves (or maybe tobacco) and spice. Deep and complex. A strong backbone of acidity. Long finish. Chianti. The name for some evokes thoughts of cheap wine. Not so fast. This is one of the best Chianti's one the market. Not so cheap but well priced at around $45 per bottle. This is a world class wine. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is great. Cherries when young but with time it develops tea leaves and forest floor notes. Also some sandal wood. On the palate, this has a great backbone of acidity. It really needs a decade or so to hit its peaks but even young is delicious. This is not your regular Chianti. Deep garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is great with cherries, slight anise, slight tea leaves and spice. Full bodied. Great backbone of acidity. On the palate, lots of bright cherries with some anise. Long finish. Deep and complex. Light tannins. Drinking great now and will continue for another ten to fifteen years. This works great with food, pasta with a tomato sauces is a classic choice.
