2014 Palazzo Right Bank Proprietary Red Reserve, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

This is a Napa wine made in the style of a right bank Bordeaux blend. Mostly Merlot with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Purple/ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, slight chocolate, cigar box and slight earthy funk. Full bodied. On the palate, this has light tannins. Flavors of black cherries, some spice with underlying earthiness. Good balance. Delicious. Nice finish. This is drinking well now but may still get better as it matures. Drink over the next ten to twelve years. This drinks well on its own and will work great with roast duck or chicken.

Scott Palazzo makes some mighty fine wines out in Napa. This one is no exception. This is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon hence the "Right Bank" name. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is very nice with black cherries, cherries, a bit of dark chocolate, slight cigar box and spice. On the palate, this has a lush texture but is by no means a fruit bomb. Good acidity. This will work well with a wide variety of foods especially roasts. This is a proprietary red from Napa made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 1% each of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Tasted from two bottles, and one bottle was good, the other one great. At age 18, that is to be expected. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is great with black cherries, black raspberries, gravel and roasted meat and herbs. On the palate, this is complex as the layers start to unwind in the glass. What a beautiful showing for this red wine. This has aged beautifully despite having 15.5% abv. Another in a long line of high alcohol Napa Wines that have stood the test of time. It is a blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, and 1% of each cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec. Purple in color, opaque and bright. Nice to get a chance to revisit this. It has come together nicely and improved a bit since release. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Franc. This is made from those barrels which did not qualify for the top wines. Purple in color with some ruby at the rim. The nose is nice with cherries, tobacco, sour cherries, sandalwood and anise. On the palate, this is drinking great. I doubt it gets any better but certainly has another five years. Lots of red fruits and a bit darker with some earthiness. Light tannins. Nice finish. This will go with a wide variety of foods

This is made from 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and the rest Merlot and Malbec. Insignia is one of the First Growth wines of California. Its great just about every vintage and has been for decades. This one is no exception. Inky purple. The nose has cassis, graphite, blueberries, leather and cigar box. On the palate, this is still young. Medium tannins. Great balance. Lots of cassis and some blueberries with underlying damp forest floor. Long finish. Delicious. Will work great with heartier foods and certainly with meat dishes. The price on these is up to around $250
