2014 K Vintners Syrah Motor City Kitty, USA, Washington, Wine Review

Purple/ruby in color. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper and a burnt rubber note that is present (in a good way) in many Washington Syrahs. On the palate, there is nice boysenberry fruit. Layered but tight with fruit and crushed rocks. There is an almost seamless texture to this wine that is really nice. It will work with a wide variety of food and has a nice backbone of acidity to assist. Good finish. This competes with wines at twice the price. Good now, it probably won't improve but should remain here for at least five and probably ten more years.

Merlot vs Syrah: Which Varietal Blooms Brightest in Washington?

Say “Oregon” and Pinot Noir comes to mind. Argentina? Malbec. And who can say “Shiraz” without thinking of Australia? But what grape will Washington wine country claim as it’s own as it expands in production and popularity? There are so many red treasures in this state, sometimes it is hard to say. But after my luscious Saturday tasting, I’m thinking Syrah and Merlot may duke it out for the prize.

One of my favorite Washington Syrahs, the 2016 is right up there. These are big Syrahs, especially for Washington, but they will come down with age. inky purple in color, ruby at the rim. Opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, black pepper and a slight floral (violets?) note. Full bodied. Wonderful, juicy texture. Tons of black raspberry fruit on the palate with an underlying roasted herb note.

Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper, roasted herbs, slight burnt rubber, and a bit of cherries. Full bodied. Rich texture. Lots of vibrancy. On the palate, good fruit but not as boisterous as some vintages. Black raspberries, black cherries, with underlying char and roasted meats. Nice finish. This is obviously young but drinking well. It should mature for another five to ten years and drink well for eight to twelve after that. It drinks great on its own and will work for big flavored foods. Roasted chicken would work well.

Classis Washington Syrah. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black olives, slight burnt rubber and char. Full bodied. On the palate, this is a big wine, but not over ripe. Lots of black raspberry fruit with char underneath. Good acidity. Nice finish. This drinks well on its own, but works a bit better with food. It should continue to mature for the next three to five years and be good for ten after that. It would be a nice match with Indian food.

Another stunning Syrah from this winery! Syrahs from Washington are unique. They really show the terroir. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, burnt rubber, black olives, smoked meats and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great balance. On the palate, black raspberries, crushed rocks, and black pepper. Long finish. Delicious. This has a certain elegance in it not often found in new world Syrah. No harm opening now, but it should continue to mature and maybe even get better.
