2014 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France, Rhone, Wine Review

Consumed from a Magnum. Purple in color, ruby swirls. The nose is clean with black cherries and spice. On the palate, this has a soft texture. Black cherry fruit. Slight, slight bitterness to it. It seems advanced considering the format and the age, but that's fine. Drinking well now. While it has some complexity it is broader rather than deep. This is very good for the vintage and should be good for the next ten years. Not sure if there is any upside though.

A fine showing for this wine. At age 18, it is drinking well with plenty of time left. This bottle was decanted for sediment and served. It could have used an hour in the decanter or more to really open. The last glass was the best. Deeper ruby in color, mostly opaque. The nose is clean for the most part. Cherries, raspberries, some earthiness and nice minerality on the nose. On the palate, this is medium to full bodied. Plenty of depth with nice layering in the glass. This was a very nice bottle. It was clean and must have been well stored all of these years. Ruby in color. The nose has red berries (kind of a cross between cherries and raspberries) with slight violets, roasted herbs and a bit of black pepper. On the palate, this has some depth and a bit of complexity. At or slightly past peak (perhaps) but drinking wonderfully. Cherries with roasted herbs and slight forest floor. Good acidity. Nice finish. No hurry but it won't get better and should probably be consumed in the next five to seven years though it will last longer. It will go with

Great showing for this bottle at age 17. Purple in color with some ruby swirls, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with plums, black raspberries, worn leather, slight dried floral note and spice. Full bodied. Tannins mostly resolved. On the palate, this is deep and complex. Flavors of plums, raspberries with some spice. This bottle is clean with just a bare touch of funk. Nice finish. Seemingly at peak, these bottles probably should be consumed in the next five to seven years. Great on its own, this works better with food. Chili or beef stew would be a nice match.

This is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the rest is the other permitted varietals. At age 22, it is showing some age and a bit past prime. This bottle had been bought on release and well cellared. Ruby/brown in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries, dried cherries, soy/umami, and spice. Medium bodied. There are some drying tannins left. Better on the palate. Complex with layers of dried and fresh cherries. Good balance. Nice finish.
